80 year old women is being told she can do nothing about cancelling with this company after just 5 days even though she hasnt had any magazines delivered yet. They will bill her for 90 months. She was called on July 29, 2008 by a Mr. Johnson from United Publishers Of America.
She had given him her checking account # with no clue as to what she was ordering and how much it would cost her.
She is almost 80 years old and has a very difficult time of hearing so it is not surprising she would be taken advantage of especially by this company.
They stated when I said she wanted to cancel that it had been over 3 days and she was not allowed to cancel but she is liable for 90 months of Magazine subscriptions.
I am her daughter and am trying to handle this matter for her as she is confused a lot with these things.
This person was very persistent and very rude! I told him it was terrible to take advantage of older people like this that are on a fixed income.
He said there is nothing we can do about it we have to pay.

FTC Suit
AUTHOR: Jl1219 - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Friday, November 28, 2008
The FTC has an active suit against this company for their misleading sales tactics. If your mother was misled when they initially contacted her (which is likely, considering this company's record), you should go to the FTC's website and fill out a report there. The attorney with the FTC who is handling the case should contact you for further information.
Also, google the magazines she's supposed to be getting and go to their individual websites to find out how to cancel subscriptions and contact the magazines directly, cancel through them. After you've canceled all the subscriptions and confirmed that the full subscription cost will be refunded, contact United Publishers again, inform them that you have done their legwork for them and canceled the subscriptions, confirming that the full subscription costs will be refunded, therefore, there are no costs left for you to pay. If they continue to give you problems, you may want to contact your county bar association and see if there is an attorney in your area who will work for reduced fees (and do a free initial consultation). They may be able to help out by sending a well-worded letter to them on your mother's behalf.
