ready to join lawsuit

AUTHOR: andy - (United States of America)

POSTED: Wednesday, April 07, 2010

Linda,

My wife has had similar experiences with UoP also.  Dropped from classes, lost home-work,un-reachable teachers and advisors, and undocumented unpaid balance that they had the student loan money for but wanted her to pay out of pocket. She withdrew from UoP and started at a different university. UoP refuses to send her transcripts to the other school. Now as of today, it seems UoP had recorded my wife's debit card information from when she had to pay shipping on books covered by her student loans. They used this information and drained my bank account !! We would like to join this lawsuit. Please e-mail me any information you can reguarding this law suit.  (((Redacted)))

            thanks,  Andy

#7 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Ex-employee outraged at business practices

AUTHOR: Anonymous - (United States of America)

POSTED: Friday, March 05, 2010

I used to work for this company. They are number driven even though they say the experience is about the student. I was fired from this company due to "not meeting my budget." They had no documentation to prove why they were firing me. When I first started employment with the University I thought it was a great school but now am utterley dissappointed in finding out the position they hired me for was not to help people but to "sell the school." If you need inside information maybe I can help.

Here is my story:

I started going to University of Phoenix after another friend of mine told me she was having success there. My classes started in the fall of 2006. I had told the university I wanted to persue a law degree, which they told me "An Associates degree in the Arts of Criminal Justice would be the best way for you to get the law degree." First of all: There is NO LEGIT LAW PROGRAM in UOP. Criminal Justice is great for forensics, or to be a cop. You need a legal studies degree to become a lawyer. Secondly, I think they are doctoring their books because they claim I owe them about 5000.00 (not counting student loans) after I ended up in several bad situations. I failed 2 classes due to attendance, even though I was in my classes 2 nights a week after having to walk 3 miles to the local community college. They waived those, which I felt was awesome of them, and I resumed my courses retaking those classes again and passing them. I then became homeless into my second block. Dispite my luck I had faith, and I passed those 2 classes. The 3rd set of classes I failed. I retook theose and passed as well as my fourth set of classes. My fifth set I again failed. I paid them $1000.00 to reenroll in class again (they claim I owed them 3600.00 and this is before I read the reports) and they told me they would wave the other $2600.00 I owed them as long as I passed my next two classes. I have a pell grant and a student loan, which I use to pay for school. (which they explained to me if I didn't pass the class the student loan didn't cover it I had to retake the class and pay for the failed class out of pocket.) Silly me fell for that one.........I failed those classes too due to an emotional collapse: I didn't understand an assignment and asked a teacher for help. I even provided my cell phone number and asked her to call me to help me. Not only did she not call, but the only response to my question I got was "Read the material I gave you and you will figure it out." I did read it: I didn't understand the assignment which was submitted on ANOTHER WEBSITE other than UOP's and I stated this in a response to the teacher again asking her to call me because I was having trouble and I didn't understand the assignment as far as the other website. I was told again to read and I would understand, so then I stopped going to my classes. After all what was the point if I didnt understand it and they were supposed to be teaching me yet I was not having anything explained to me.
So now I get a letter stating I owe ACS (I guess a company they are tied in with) money for my classes, yet it doesn't give an amount, just says to call them. I also get a bill for my student loan. I had to get a second lender for the loan because my original lender (Wachovia) doesn't offer loans anymore because of the merger with Wells Fargo. I haven't had the best dealings with Wachovia anyways so I went to Bank of America. I get a bill from Bank of America stating I owe almost 2100.00 for a student loan, plus my original loan from Wachovia was over 5000.00. If the student loan didnt cover the class I failed, why was Bank of America (who only paid the loan on the most recent 2 classes Wachovia covered the rest) billed in the first place? To top it off, from what I can gather, I owe the school something around 5000.00 as well. On credits for a degree that is useless to me. On the up side, my loans aren't in default, so I can go to another institution. Thankfully I also now have a stable home and my fiancee' to back me.
This angers me that I have taken like 12 classes and I know they are overcharging me, AND they also lied to my friend that went there for a teaching degree. They lied to her and told her a pell grant would cover all the expenses. Now she has a loan in default because she failed a class (due to being homess as well) and I told her about the waiver then read reports and told her stay far away from them. They sold me on a law class not even worth anything. They claimed they could help me achieve my dreams and accomplish my goals: All they did was shatter them. If anyone from UOP reads this I only have one thing to say: What you did to me was wrong................what is worse is you guys also knew I was a single mother! You not only stole from me but you stole from my daughter. I had nothing and you took it down to less. And to rob an innocent child! How do you people sleep at night?

If there is anything you can do and hopefully you check this link please let me know..

Let's sue these unethical people!

AUTHOR: Dan - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, July 13, 2009

I started to do some reasearch late 2008 from University of Phoenix. They were really anxious (pushy) to get my started as soon as possible. I turned in my financial aid paperwork, and was told via e-mail, that I was financially clear to start school up.

The courses are five weeks, I missed one day of class, even though the syllabus says we need to check in only three days a week. I was dropped from the class in Week 2, but was never notified about that drop. I reach the end of semester, and wait for my grade, only to find out that I had been dropped.

This is what started all the confusion. My loan paperwork went through, I received an e-mail from Sharon Smith, who said that I owed the University $2400 and some change if I wanted to continue being a student there (it would cover the previous semester as well as the next semester).

I was already told that I was financially clear to start classes, so why would I owe them money for the previous semester. Right away, they started threatening collections. I ignored the e-mails and politefully withdrew from the school. Since then, I've been getting e-mails from Sharon Smith saying that I owe various amounts of money, anywhere from $729 to $1738. I asked what the final amount I owe is, and they told me it was $729 for that first semester that I was financially clear for. I have since been getting bills in the mail for those various amounts, with threats to call collections.

Finally today, almost eight months since my withdrawl from the University, I received a phone call with an urgent message for me to call back. Did not state who he was with or what his order of business is. I looked up the phone number online, only to find out that the gentleman is calling from Platinum Recovery Services, which I further researched, is a collection agency for University of Phoenix.

I ignored his phone call, found this thread, and want to file a class action suit. I've been harassed, lied to, and treated unethically by an unethical organization.

Every other University makes sure they have payments prior to the start of classes, I was told that I was clear, so why do I owe this money?

My tuition was paid for with my Stafford loan, in addition to some funding from Wells Fargo bank. I recently received a statement from them showing that I must start making monthly payments on, meaning what University of Phoenix took that money, pocketed it in the multi-million dollar industry, and am now trying to get more money from me.

I never borrowed any money from University of Phoenix, now they are falsely claiming that I need to pay money back to them. It's no wonder they make so much money in a fiscal year, if they are stealing Title IV funds.

I was also told over the phone by the initial advisor, that they receive their checks based on the number of students they enroll, and to see if I knew of other students I could send to her.

i was really messed up and became a victim of this U.O.P.axia college

AUTHOR: Leo - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 08, 2009

Hi there i was messed up/and became a victim by this university myself so I'd like to join and file a formal complaint, class action lawsuit.heres my original complaint On Jan 29th, 2008, I was contacted by University of Phoenix admissions counselor by the name Jason Abriel: Jason Abriel, Admissions Counselor University of Phoenix | Axia of University of Phoenix 200 Corporate Pointe Suite A-150| Culver City, CA 90230| Phone (310) 242-2054| Fax (310) 525-2692 | email: jason.abriel@phoenix.edu, after I inquired online regarding their online degree program for IT/networking. From what I understood, and told, I have four options to pay for college. My 1st option would be financial aid & grant, 2nd option scholarships, 3rd put standard loans, 4th option TR,(i have no idea what this is), last is cash. I told my financial situation, and what I wanted to achieve. I had told him I'm looking for affordable education with a school of better reputation, and at the same time earn my online degree for IT/networking. I told him my previous trade/college schools i attended, Computer Learning Center of Los Angeles, CA 90010 back in summer 2000 thru Spring 2001, Los Angeles Trade Tech 1998 thru 1999. I like to find work in that field, so that I can earn more. I was already enrolled hoping that Financial Aid, Cal Grant would help me pay for college, and what ever left, I would get a check in the mail to do whatever I please. I had told Admissions Counselor Jason Abriel, I dont make much, and he requested to see my 2006 Federal Tax 1040EZ. He reassured me that with my household income, I would qualify for Financial Aid, and or Cal Grant. Also my IT credits would then apply/be credited to Axia college of University of Phoenix. The 2nd last option would be to apply for student loan thru private lender, and last option is to pay cash. I did everything to signing up for school through Phoenix University. However now I am enrolled in Axia college of University of Phoenix for 2 weeks now. I just assumed it was just a division of the school because it was so large. Yesterday I received a call from Cynthia Garner University of Phoenix | AXIA College l Online Campus and Campus Share Initiative l 3157 E Elwood St | Phoenix, AZ 85034 phone (800) 366-9699 Ex: 79675 | fax (602) 643-0700 | email: cynthia.mcdowell@phoenix.edu that I did not qualify for Financial Aid/Cal Grant. And that I have to pay 100% of my tuition of $7600/year out of my pocket. Why wasnt I told I would end up paying all my tuition fee & credit me for my transcript/previous credits I earned from Computer Learning Center of Los Angeles before I started my class on February 25th. Then while browsing online, I came across some chats, forums, testimonial from previous students of Axia College of University of Phoenix of involvement of shaddy business & fraud, also making me think that I am getting a degree from Axia and not University of Phoenix. If I wanted to go to a college not a university I wouldn't be paying the outrageous prices, and dont want to be ripped off by dropping my 2 online classes, which are Gen 105 & Com 140,and cancelling my Sallie Mae: P.O.Box#147020,Ganesville,FL 32614-7020.student loan. My account #??????????,here are links to rip off report, and U.O.P pleaded guilty article report from associated press.http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/225/RipOff0225314.htm, http://www.azcentral.com/business/articles/0116biz-apollogroupsuit16-ON.html In FINALIZED CONCLUSION, can you please DROP AND CANCEL MY STUDENT LOANS from Sallie Mae Incorporated and AXIA COLLEGE of University of Phoenix ASAP? I am looking forward to your SPEEDIEST RESOLUTION/ REPLY to this matter. Lee Los Angeles, California
