I ship with UPS almost daily. I do warranty work for another company and ship on both their account and my own. While using my own account, I shipped an item to a customer of mine. It arrived in a damaged condition so I promptly filed a claim. I had paid for $1000.00 of insurance and I estimate there was $375.00 worth of damages. I was told by UPS that they would not pay the claim because the item was improperly packaged. I have sent dozens of this same item the same exact way without any damage over several years. Ok, I was mad. I had to take care of the repair myself. Money down the drain...

Fast forward a few weeks (after watching the UPS guy toss around box after box, carelessly): I receive the box in the attached picture. I inferred from the condition of the box that UPS couldn't care less about what they ship. I contacted UPS to ask why it wasn't ok for me to package something in a way they disapprove of but it WAS ok for them to damage my packaging!?!

The answer I received was startling: "You can expect external damage to your packages." Seriously, the person on the other end of the chat admitted that I have to package to their standards because they will damage the packaging! BULL$*#@!
Here's the lesson - Although UPS has me over a barrel, I will NEVER purchase insurance through them. If you ship a lot, get private shipping insurance. UPS is disgraceful and I will switch carriers as soon as a more viable option becomes available. To top it all off, I found out that a package I sent Next Day Air took almost a week to arrive! DOWN WITH UPS!!!!

I never thought...

First off, according to my UPS account history, the date for that shipment was changed to 09/23 due to it being delivered to the wrong address. I had an upset customer over this issue so believe me, I know when it was delivered. If you go to the UPS website and enter the tracking number, you will see that it was last updated on 09/23/14. I have no idea why it says that it was delivered on the 18th but surely they wouldn't upate it 5 days later if it was. Right?

Ok, I'll admit that what I said about the empty box was over the top. There is also a point to made that out of 100 poorly packed sipments only 1 could be damaged. However, the way I packed the damaged package was standard in my business. I know this because the company I do warranty work for ships this same item the same way. They ship far more than I do and therefore have private shipping insurance. Because of their volume, they have had more claims of damage than I have. Every time they have had a claim with that insurance for the same exact tpe of packaging, it has been paid.

I have nothing to gain by lying about this. I'm not out for revenge. I don't even WANT anything. I just want enough people to get their hackles up to perhaps effest some change at UPS.

Looks like you provided the wrong tracking #.

All carriers have similar packing guidelines. They can easily be refered to in their websites. The picture of the box definately appears to have had significant empty space inside. Your box was not the only shipment being transported on the trucks. The box appears larger than average, so may have had other boxes set on top of it in the truck. All carriers require 50 pounds of compression. An empty cardboard box obviously can not support that weight without crushing. Though you feel that simply giving any box with any sort of packing, or none at all, should appear identical upon delivery as it did when given to the carrier, common sense should indicate otherwise. Using more obvious example such as a laptop, glass framed picture, or dishes, packing as you did with your box would commonly result in damage no matter what company shipped it. If packaging as you feel should be adequate did not negate a claim, claims would run rampant (as well as fraud) and shipping fees would skyrocket.

I suggest you refer to the packing guidelines for UPS. Then compare those guidelines to FedEx and USPS. Is there a reason you are incapable of simply packing properly? If you don't care what the carrier websites indicate, then your alternative is to discontinue shipping altogether.

The next day air tracking # that you provided shows UPS received it on the 17th and it was delivered on the 18th. Sometimes I lose count on my fingers, but that doesn't add up to seven days.

No excuse and I'm not a liar

To my mind, there is no excuse for handling a package in a manner that it arrives as pictured. An empty box should get there in good condition if I am paying for it. The box pictured was not empty, however. Fortunately, nothing was damaged.

As to the late shipment, here is the tracking number:

1Z21A472A299276902

I hope that settles whether or not I am telling the truth and lends credence to the rest of my story. I am not trying to get anything from UPS. Truthfuly, I just want enough people to know that we can perhaps make a difference.

Really?

It appears that the box is partially hollow or poor packing material was used. Shipping many poorly packed boxes without incident doesn't prove that damage was not caused by poor packaging. All shipping companies have similar packaging guidelines. If you shipped all your shipments through other carriers, you'd have similar results. No carrier would pay for a damage claim with packaging like that.

Your description of the 'late' next day air is also lacking. There are a plethora of reasons to justify a late shipment for all carriers. Why don't you provide a tracking # to show what happened?
