After signing up for $39.99 per month plan, several months went by - in fact a year went by and the bill was rarely under $78.00 a month. I decided it was more than I was willing to pay for wireless phone services, and started to look for other options.
I called customer service and first tried to go back to prepay (I had a pre-pay plan with Verizon, but fore decided to upgrade the phone and plan). I was told this wasn't possible until I completed my contract. After going over and over the contract and doing math for what I would spend over the next year (when my 2-year contract would end) and decided to get out of it by paying the ETF (Early Termination Fee) - which is stated to be $175 in the Customer Agreement.
I figured that compared to what I spend for another year of monthly $80 bills, it was worth it to pay the $175.00 ETF, and then find a more reasonable plan with another company. I emailed, and then spoke to customer service on the phone, and insisted that I wanted to pay the full balance on my bill and then cancel my service/end my contract. Well, you wouldn't believe how in every conversation and every email they tried to get me to keep my service with them. Well, why couldn't they just let me go back to pre-pay - isn't some or my money, better than none? Oh well.
Well, all is said and done, and the service was cut as of November 4th. All bills due, paid in full and on time. I had not received my bill for the ETF until a couple weeks ago - and the amount due is $191.57. I understand that not that much more than $175, but never - any where in their information, agreements, does it state they charge fees or taxes (taxes!!) on top of the ETF. Again, I read the Customer Agreement, I talked to customer services several times and each time was quoted $175. Period.
I have emailed back and forth with customer services since receiving the bill, and they tell me what they are officially calling the extra fees:

$ 4.03- Federal Universal Charge
$11.64- MN State Sales Tax
$ .90- St. Paul City Sales Tax

The latest rep., goes on to explain the extra charges by telling me they are required by law to collect and remit taxes to the goverment..

Well yes, for wireless services and product sales- not for collecting a ETF set by Verizon!

It's BS! They want me to believe that they are required to tack on taxes, related to a fee that has nothing to do with services rendered or product sold. Furthermore, I feel torn - I want to honor my agreement to pay the ETF, yet I'm adamant about not paying a cent of the bogus fees/taxes. If I pay the ETF, will they go ahead and report the balance of fee/"taxes" to collection agencies and credit bureaus, after receiving the $175, which is all they are entitled to? At this point I don't trust them not to - and that makes me not want to give them one more XXXX dime.
