I have had nothing but problems after purchasing my brand new 2001 V.W Jetta..
I had vehicle only 6 months and it left me stranded due to malfunction of emission control sensor..
5 months after that, ignition lock cylinder was inoperable, needing them to repair.
2 months later, owned for 1 yr 1 month, car was burning a lot of oil so consumption test was done and determined to be true, that the car was in fact consuming abnormal amount of oil.. As "A Courtesy to me, the customer" Volkswagen replaced piston rings, rod bearings and deglaz ed cylynder walls.. They had my car 6 days to rebuild engine.
6 months later car was shaking really bad when driving on the freeway, took it in and service technition discovered that rear brakes were warped and rear brake pads had "premature wear.". Those were replaced..
Throughout this course of time the passenger brake light had been replace 2 times, air condition vent was not working and had to be remove and install new center air outlet, armrest broke and had to be replaced, glove compartment latch broke, and the brake lights have gone out and been repaired numerous times but are still faulty, not working at this time..
Volkswagen has treated me as though I was the one inconviencing them!! I regret purchasing this vehicle and will continue discouraging anyone from ever buying a Volkswagen!!
I don't feel safe in this car!! After doing some reseach
I see now that I am not alone.
Knowing there are many other VW's on the road with the same mechanical problems my car, i'm concerned with the safety of others as well as myself!

Leased a 2001 Jetta. Luckily we gave it back to them after 3 years. Had many of the same problems occur. Several of the more common problems: windows and coil were covered as recall items. I think they extented the windows out to 7 years/100,000 miles, something like that. The interesting thing about the Jetta was that parts of it were made of the cheapest material I have ever seen put in a car. You mentioned the arm rest, the glove box latch and the A/C vents. I could tell the arm rest wouldn't last so we put it in the up position and never used it again. Same for the glove box. Didn't bother to put anything in or out in the 3 years we had it. These parts couldn't have cost more than a few dollars at most. The parts wouldn't hold up to normal use. Another interesting thing was that the car only had a 2 year/24,000 mi warranty. During the 2 years, VW was always replacing parts and items under warranty, that I had never heard of. We seldom drove it the third year, didn't want to have to pay for any repairs out of pocket. This POS was made in Saltillo. Like the Dodge SRT-10.

I have a 2001 Jetta as well, and my "crapwagen" has had a lot of the same problems. Within 8 months of owning the "crapwagen", I had replaced all 4 brakes, the ignition coil, all the plugs and plug wires, and various other things I can't vividly remember, as I know exactly "jack" about cars. LOL. My rear passenger window also fell into the door, and when I took it to get fixed, they never even replaced the mechanism to roll it up and down...it's been stuck in the "up" position for a year and I never got a cler explaination as to why. I let that one slide, as my son tends to throw things out that window anyway LOL! The car would die unexpectedly halfway through turns, and die more often than not at stoplights, almost getting me rearended or t-boned on several occasions. They (Lewis VW) told me that was the ignition coil, and replaced that, but it kept on happening after I paid darn near $700 to get everything fixed on it. Come to find out from my NEW mechanic, that had absolutely nothing to do with anything, and that Lewis VW had screwed up the wiring in the engine while they were "fixing" my car. Sheesh! It also burns a lot of oil, and on more than one occasion, I've randomly checked the oil due to some funny squeaking noise from the engine and found the oil tank bone dry. As aarid as the Gobi desert. Sweet. Also I really think my car has been cursed or possessed by the unlucky car spirits, as it's been broken into 3 times in 2 years. It's sporting a crowbar would in the rear passenger door, coincidentally (?) the same window that won't roll down ever again, has been smashed with a crowbar or something 3x, in the middle of winter, and I've been robbed all three times. I'll never buy another VW again, and I'm kicking myself in the bum for not sticking with Saab. Best of luck, and don't buy another one. LOL.
