Stopped in wal mart to pick up refills at the pharmacy and needed to get home in a hurry. Seemed to be a good day since I was able to walk up within a couple of minutes to get my meds. The only items I had were my meds and in a their small med bag with the receipt stapled over the top as usual. Headed out the door and 5 foot granny asked about receipt, held the bag up and that didn't satisfy her. I kept going and she came after grabbing my bag saying I need to see it, and twisting my hand and the bag around where she could read the d**n numbers. Seeing the receipt was not good enough! While she was holding the bag I told her, " you know you can get into trouble about this", and her reply(sung) was a tune from a song, "ain't that a shame"..I left and headed for my car and the more I thought about it the madder I got.

I knew I had already read on here about a similar episode in shreveport and the results there. Well before I got a half mile away I had the manager on the phone telling her what happened. The manager told me the lady was not supposed to do that because, " anything bought at the pharmacy can't leave without being paid for first and she did not need to see any receipt". She asked if that was the only bag I had and told her yes and she said she would have to have a talk with her about what she did being wrong.

I am still steamed over it. Have never had it happen before and the usual guy that is at the door was over by the door sitting down and said nothing. The manager could not believe what the old lady said in reply to me. The old lady acted like she was the sheriff.

I don't think this is going to be the end of this. I am normally easy going with things like this and have shown my receipt before when leaving and other times had my buggy full and some stuff not in bags and just walked right on out with just a nod or even at times slowed down to show the receipt without them even asking to see it. I guess this is one of those things that gets under your skin and u just have to scratch it until your satisfied, so I think I got some scratching to do.....Rock

Ain't that a shame...

AUTHOR: Bryce - (U.S.A.)

I used to work in a grocery during regular school hours where the elderly and retarded were heavily used as baggers for us cashiers. As a cashier, I did not have to bag groceries AT ALL but usually did if needed (you know, help present a good face for the customer). There was a state school nearby (the grocery got a tax break for hiring these people who really couldn't do their jobs, so they were highly desirable employees, to an extent) and the elderly pressured their way in.
Both the elderly and the disabled learned quickly that a cashier would start doing the bagging if they slacked.
The elderly were not there for the money; they were there for the socialization. That's why they wanted to talk more than they worked. The disabled were there because social workers said they should be. That is why I transferred to a sister store not near the state school, and with a larger pool of younger workers to work during school hours.
Of course, the older workers thought younger people should pull more weight because they are younger. NO. We are all getting the same paycheck, and there is no sliding pay in consideration to age. If they are so "set in their ways,' what happened to the work ethic of 'the greatest generation,' if they are so 'set in their ways'? It is only a double standard, and is not right. The grocery did think that the elderly and disabled are 'set in their ways' and should not be confronted." That only winds up in lawsuits. A person roughly between the ages of 16-55 would not be allowed to be 'set in their ways,' they would only be written up or fired. Double standards are not fair, nor allowable.

Most elderly are only there for the socialization, not the paycheck. They should find somewhere to volunteer and stop collecting that paycheck a welfare recipient could actually use.
I'll tell you a short story about a disabled, ex-state school worker named "Chris." One Sunday morning, when I was the one and only cashier to open, he (a forty-something) was to open as bagger with me. Before we had any major customers, he was out sweeping the front. He walked by the register about the same time a customer with two cartloads came to the register. I told him I needed him to bag, and he said he NEEDED TO PLACE HIS BROOM IN THE BACK OF THE STORE, ABOUT THREE HUNDRED FEET AWAY. A BROOM. OH GOD, NO, DON'T LET A BROOM BE OUT OF PLACE FOR TEN MINUTES. He never showed after about five minutes. He simply wasn't in the mood to bag groceries. The only ones in the store at that time were me, the manager and 'Chris.' I paged him. He finally showed about ten minutes later. I was struggling to keep going with the order and the coupons, etc. He showed up, and I told the customer that that, as they say, is that. He will be bagging your entire order. If he wants to screw around, he will be bagging the entire, three hundred dollar, two-cart order. It will teach him a lesson if he wants to continue working. Surprisingly, the customer agreed it was right. Thankfully, customers who come during the off hours with large orders DO UNDERSTAND the problems inherent to such situations.
I moved on to the next customer, bagging her short order myself. I gave my two weeks later in the week.
If some of you missed the point, it is: NO SPECIAL TREATMENT FOR ANYONE. It simply violates the spirit of our democracy and system of laws.

#3 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Rock has a valid complaint in responce to Nikki and Vic

RE:

* Please calm down. Nikki [4/3/2008 11:11:04 PM]
* To 'Rock', who has a problem with showing his sales receipt to the Wal-Mart employee upon exiting the store: Vic [4/4/2008 9:30:42 AM]

My name is Jennifer and I am an ex- employee of the Monroe, LA, Winnsboro, LA, and Rayville, La stores.

Now, that I have grabbed your attention...

I was a LOSS PREVENTION ASSOCIATE.

TO EXPLAIN THINGS TO THOSE WHO THINK THAT KNOW WHAT THE HELL THEY ARE TALKING ABOUT.

NIKKI, FIRST OFF! NO ONE, NO MATTER WHAT AGE THEY MAY BE, OR IF THEY NEED THE JOB TO MAKE EXTRA CASH, NO ONE CAN MAKE UP THEIR OWN RULES AND LAW!!!!!!!!!!

EVERY SINGLE PERSON IN THE COMPANY GOES THROUGH ORIENTATION!!! EVERY DETAIL IS GONE OVER.. AND I ASSURE YOU, WALMART IS VERY CLEAR, AND TEST ARE TAKEN TO PROVE THAT THE ASSOCIATES UNDERSTAND THEIR POSITION AND THE COMPANY LAW.

VIC, ROCK DID NOT SEEK ANY FORM OF REPAYMENT!! ROCK CONTACTED THE STORE DUE TO THE DOOR ASSOCIATE DOING AN WRONGFUL STOP!! HE WANTED TO ADVISE THE STORE MANAGER SO THIS LADY CAN BE RETRAINED, AND COACHED BY MANAGEMENT.

NOW, GETTING DOWN TO THE ACTUAL RULES WITHIN WALMART!

THERE IS UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES CAN ANY FLOOR ASSOCIATE STOP ANYONE EVER AT THE DOOR. THEY CAN ONLY STOP AND REQUEST FOR A RECEIPT AFTER THE ALARMS GOES OFF, AND ONLY CAN THEY STOP A CUSTOMER WITH A ITEM OUT OF A BAG BEFORE THE EXIT THROUGH THE DOORS.

ONLY MANAGEMENT AND LOSS PREVENTION CAN MAKE STOPS, HOWEVER IT IS AN ILLEGAL STOP IN ROCK'S CASE. " MANAGEMENT AND LOSS PREVENTION CAN ONLY!!!! AND I REPEAT ONLY STOP A CUSTOMER IF THEY HAD SEEN THE CUSTOMER CONCEAL AN ITEM, AND THEY HAVE TO KNOW WHERE IT HAPPEND, WHAT ITEM IT WAS, WHERE IT WAS CONCEALED AT, AND THEY CAN NOT LOOSE SIGHT OF THE SHOPLIFTER FOR MORE THAN 5 SECONDS, AND CAN NOT STOP THEM UNTIL THEY HAVE EXITED THROUGH THE FIRST SET OF DOORS.

END OF STORY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANY OTHER STOPS ARE ILLEGAL AND THE ASSOCIATE, MANAGEMENT,OR LOSS PREVENTION CAN BE TERMINATED, AND/OR LOOSE THEIR POSITION FOR THIS ERROR.

ALL ILLEGAL STOPS CAN BE PURSUED BY ANY ACCUSED SHOPLIFTER/CUSTOMER.

THIS IS THE REASON WHY WALMART HAS SUCH RULES AND TRAINED EMPLOYEES AND MANAGEMENT THAT CAN MAKE SUCH STOPS AND KNOWS WHAT TO LOOK FOR.

LOSS PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT, HAD SPECIFIC POLICIES, WRITTEN REPORTS, PICTURE, VIDEO FILED, ETC.

THEY JUST DO NOT STOP ANYONE AT AT POINT AND TIME!

SO BEFORE ANY OF YOU DECIDE TO JUDGE, YOU BETTER d**n WELL KNOW THE LAW OF PARISH, STATE, FEDERAL, AND COMPANY LAWS.

AND NO MATTER WHO THE PERSON IS AT THE COMPANY, HAS NO RIGHT TO MAKE THEIR OWN d**n LAWS, NO MATTER WHAT THEIR AGE IS!!!!!

So you seek immunity from being caught with stolen merchandise? This is on par with all the other schemes to defraud merchants, who then have to pass the costs on to the rest of us.

Worse still, when you are caught and adjudicated, we have to pay the costs of your incarceration. Go back to Slip & Fall; there's more $, if you don't get caught by the cameras.
END.

As you said, it was a 5 foot granny. Many of the elderly are pretty much set in their ways of thinking and how they should do things. Many of the elderly also have different conceptions on how things should be handled. The manager already told you that she was wrong and would be spoken to. If you pursue this matter, it may get the granny fired (if she's still working, she probably really needs the money). If you dwell on this matter, it will cause your "hate mechanism" to kick in. I hate it when my "hate mechanism" is on because then I have a bad attitude towards everything.
