I had been working for Walgreen's for almost 4 years. And this is how they treated me:

At about 2pm on October 3rd 2003 the loss prevention supervisor came into the store to deal with 2 employees stealing from Walgreen's. At 3:15 p.m. I was instructed to go in to the break room to talk with loss prevention. Supervisor's name was Ross. He started off with getting my information and then he went into the conversation with stating that our store was being watched for fraudulent activity. He told me that they had noticed that there was loss to the company by me & I was one of the people being watched.

He then wanted me to list where I have worked in my career with the Walgreen's company. I told him that I worked at the MGM store and that I also worked at the Spring Mountain and Jones store. He asked how long I have worked at the MGM store and I told him that it was about eight months. He asked me if I had any problems at that store and I told him no except for cash shortages that occurred because of management, stealing money out of the cash drawers, and that they were caught and fired for the offences.

We moved on to see if I have caused any loss to the Walgreen's company. I said no, not intentionally. I told him that one day I walked out because I had mistakenly forgotten to pay for a drink. I had returned the next morning and paid for the drink. He asked me if I had told anyone about it I told him No I paid for the drink and had put it back into the cooler I am honest and I had no reason to lie to him. Then he said what else. I told I could not recall anything else, so he proceeded to say think harder.

I thought harder and I told him that I had given a employee discount to my girlfriend (at the time) which I did not believe is wrong because I was told by a assistant manager, Mr. Lusung about a month before, that it was ok. That is the way I understood it. What happened was, that one day one of my friends was in the store and we were pretty close friends. When she got rung up he came up to me and said was that your girlfriend and I said no. He continued to say that if it was, he would have given her a discount. At that time I thought that it would be OK to give my girlfriend a discount. I know that discounts are only allowed for relatives and employees. I was not married to her but I was going to marry her so I figured that since we were dating it would be ok.

Then the supervisor asked me if that was it and kept making it seem like it wasn't everything I was telling him. I then mentioned to him that one day the Frito lays guy, our potato chips distributor gave me a bag of chips because he had an extra. There was no theft involved. Then he proceeded to tell me that that was wrong of me to accept the chips. I told him "yes" and that I shouldn't have done that. He proceeded to say that he wasn't out to get me fired or anything like that and kept of persisting that I tell him more. I told him that I have never caused any other loss to Walgreen's; I have never taken money out of the cash drawer to borrow or anything to that extent.

He then had me call the store manager in to the break room. I did. he then told the store manager that I had admitted to taking the drink, and giving a employee discount away to a non employee or family member, and that the total amount I have cause loss of to Walgreen's was approximately 7 dollars. I was let back out on to the sales floor where I would finish the remainder of my shift.

At about 3:55 pm I was called in to the office and informed that I was being terminated for the 7 dollars in loss that I caused to Walgreen's and that it is considered grazing. I that time I was paid my money for the hours I had put in. And told to pay the 7 dollars I had supposedly taken. I did and got my receipt or any kind of confirmation. I was told to leave my vest and leave.

Try The E E O C

AUTHOR: zappo - (United States of America)

POSTED: Sunday, January 31, 2010

I am so sorry for you.  We have a loved one that had been terminated "WRONGFULLY" from Walgreens in the corporate structure.  We have gone to the EEOC and retained an attorney.  Some looney tunes made outrageous allegations that are slander at best and all FALSE.  We are seeing if we have legal grounds to all parties involved inclduing the looney tunes that needs to be in some physc ward.  She is the one who should have been terminated.   Clearly Walgreens did not investigate a thing.  Mind you all this came 2 days after the annoucement of outsourcing 800 jobs to India and the Phillipines.  Looney Tunes locked herself into a job since if she is ever terminated it will be considered "Retailation".  Something is so wrong with this.  I guess the solution by Walgreens is to WRONGFULLY terminate employees.  Seems most states are "At Will" employment.  Meaning Walgreens can do what they like, YET we will see what THE EEOC has to say.

May I suggest going to the EEOC, they have a web-site that may be of some benefit to you.

Good Luck

two sides

One thing I noticed while working for Walgreens is that your integridy is of the utmost importance.  I am not saying you lack integridy by any means.  However; what seems petty to most people, Walgreens management sees it in a bigger picture.  I once saw a girl fired for taking the coupon ads out ot the Sunday paper's that were going to be thrown away anyways.  They deemed it stealing.  What would not be given a second thought or even be an issue at other retail stores is a Walgreens.  I think the fact that it appears that you rang up your g/f.  If you checked her out, that was a big no-no.  We were not to check out our own family members, but have another clerk in cosmetics or photo. do it. And you stated that, "discount. I know that discounts are only allowed for relatives and employees. I was not married to her but I was going to marry her so I figured that since we were dating it would be "  You should have followed your gut instinct and the training you received view the PPLs.  Your manager may have assumed that you were of the same household and commonlaw man and wife.

If I remember correctly, accepting gifts from vendors was covered in the PPLs.  It is wrong basically in most retail outfits.  I applaud your honestly in your interview and the fact that you told them you forget to pay for a pop.

I'm not trying to be harsh, but looking at it from a loss prevention point of view...they have some valid points.

I'm not a cheerleader for Walgreens, but I am hoping to get back on there.  Where I moved to presently does not have a Walgreens nearby.  One is in the works in the area though.  If loss prevention would put more effort into catching, making shoplifters pay a fine and looking for possible dangers to customers in the stores, that position would pay for itself.  Instead they look for the little petty offenses which leads to insulting employees that for the most part are good employees.

MANAGERS ARE THE WORST CULPRIT

AUTHOR: Ashley - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Thursday, October 29, 2009

Oh please.  Managers are the worst culprit.  I was fired from Walgreens in Hooksett, NH and ultimately it was for a candy bar that I forgot to pay for.  This is a practice all the employees at the store did, if they were working the registers or the lines were too long, they would eat or drink and then rip off the upc bar code and pay for it later.  Well I left for my shift one day, and was down the road and realized I hadn't paid for my candy bar.  I called my asst. manager immediately and told him and he said don't worry about it , just pay for it when you come in for your shift tommorrow.  Well guess what?  I was fired.  Then they tried to get me for other things that were missing, said they had proof on camera, but wouldn't show me anything.  Told me they wouldn't press charges if I would just sign something admitting to it.  Hell NO!!  I never stole anything.  Although if we want to talk about employer policies, Perhaps we should think about the managers who do the same practice as eating or drinking before paying for the product.  Or sharing expired candy that wasn't paid for with other employees, Think about that!!!!

#1 UPDATE Employee

You don't get fired for seven bucks that isn't your fault

AUTHOR: Jeremy - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, March 31, 2004

Ok Roman here's my interpretation of what happened to you. I'm an assistant manager in a Las Vegas store. As such I work closely with store managers and district staff, including Loss Prevention. They are not out to find reasons for firing people. If they called you into that breakroom for a meeting that day, it's because they had something on you. They can't fire you unless they have rock solid proof, or you confess. It is stated in company policy that you are never to accept gifts from vendors. You did, and it's grounds for termination. It's also stated that you are not to give employee discounts to anyone other that immediate family living with you. So if your aunt lives with you, she still can't get the discount because she's not a parent, sibling, spouse, or child. You gave someone else a discount, and it's grounds for termination. You walked out the door with a drink you did not pay for. Sure it's easy to say that you forgot to pay, but how are they supposed to believe that? Be honest with yourself Roman. While you may not have intentionally stolen, you did violate a few written company policies.
