I am a 23-year-old single mother to a 3-year-old boy who I am raising by myself, with no help from his father. I have worked very hard the past years to stay off the welfare rolls, to work hard, and support my son and myself without government assistance.
In the almost 3 years I worked for Walgreens, I was promoted 5 times. I started out as a front cashier who worked 4 hours a week, and by the time I was fired last week, I was a Senior Certified Pharmacy Technician. In the time that I worked for the company, I didn't have any major problems with them. I worked hard, as my promotions demonstrated, and I still have lifelong friends throughout the stores I worked in, ranging from cashiers and photo clerks to pharmacists and pharmacy managers. All have vouched for my character in this incident.
Last Thursday a loss prevention employee came in, took me into a room where I sat alone with her for 2 hours, and told me I was a thief. Despite the fact that I've had access to powerful and valuable narcotics all this time, and I've NEVER been accused of any sort of theft, she tried to nail me for supposedly stealing a box of cheap (not even $10) hair color.
She grilled me for 2 hours. She didn't ask if I had stolen. She told me that I had. She said if I couldn't provide her with the reciept from the purchase (which was a month prior to this), then that was proof enough. I mentioned that the burden of proof IS on the accuser. She refused to show me the videotapes that supposedly had evidence of my theft. She refused to show me any evidence at all. She simply came in, told me I was a thief, disregarded everything I said, offered me no recourse, and had me fired.
I asked her why I would risk my job for a box of hair color when I have a young child to support. I told her to ask anyone in either store I'd worked in if I'd ever commit such a crime. She ignored me, and when I wouldn't leave the store without being provided with proof of my crime, she called the police and had me escorted off the property. I was given a trespassing notice and told that I am not allowed on the property of ANY Walgreens in the nation. She lied to the police, said that I'd threatened to hit her and was breaking objects in the pharmacy.
When I called corporate, they also refused to provide me with the videotapes, and would not respond when I asked if it was legal for them to put theft on my record when they had no proof whatsoever. They said they would not discuss that issue with me.
I am now unemployed, and my son and I have lost our health insurance. I have also been humiliated in front of my friends and coworkers, first by being escorted out by police, and then, as if that weren't enough, loss prevention emailed every store in the state telling them that I was no longer allowed on any property of Walgreens, that I am potentially violent, and that local police are to be contacted should I come into any store.
Every employee I've spoken to (I am close to almost all of them) has backed me, and knows that this is bizarre and I was obviously "framed." I've already had several employees report to me that they've experience similar accusations, though theirs didn't end in termination. Several also knew individuals who WERE terminated for similar accusations that were also now proven. This is obviously a problem with Walgreens.
I, too, am seeking legal counsel and will fight this until the end. I would appreciate any help whatsoever - media attention, calls to the corporate office (phone number 1-847-940-2500) and the store which this took place in (listed above), letters, emails, legal assistance, and boycotts.
Thank you.
Annie

Horrible

SUBMITTED: Friday, April 10, 2009
Its absolutely horrible what has been done to you but walgreen's did follow the law in your case.
At will employment means they can fire you for any reason except for federally protected discrimination. You didn't have to steal, they just had to think you did and that's enough of a reason. They don't have to produce evidence unless they are taking you to court over the theft.
Banning you from their property is also their right. They are a private entity and can ban anyone from their premises for any reason they wish.
It really sucks what happened to you :( unfortunately I don't see any laws that have been violated.

This is Terrible!

The original complaint states that she is banned from all Walgreens. She's basically been convicted of a crime without due process. I thought Walgreens was an American company???
What if us consumers ban ourselves from Walgreens?
I'd hate to do it because I love the convenience they offer however I do not use their pharmacy due to lack of professionalism from the staff.
I guess the next time I visit a Walgreens I'll view the store in a new light.
Disturbing trend. File a lawsuit is my only suggestion. You have a right to due process before a conviction can be handed down.

Wrongful termination!

I was wrongfully terminated from Walgreens, too. I was dragged into an investigation on someone else (an assistant manager), and ended up fired. I was fired, but they proved that person who filed the complaint against the assistant manager lied, and filed a false report against that manager -- I was the one fired, and that other employee still has their job!
Been talking with a lawyer -- Walgreens gets their demand letter in a few weeks! :)

Walgreens wrongfully accusating, LP people should be fired
AUTHOR: Hiren - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, June 24, 2008
I work for Walgreens, and now it has been about a year and a couple of months, and never have I ever been so disgusted with a company before. Today, 6/23/2008, I had a big conversation with LP for about 1 and half hours, in which the only thing that he was trying to state is that I stole money from Walgreens.
Even though I pointed out the many flaws to his accusation, he claims that I(a pharmacy technician) have only been using one checkstand for the whole day, and only that checkstand came up short of money. He also claims that there is a video footage of me ACTING FUNNY, and that is proof enough for him. For those of you who do not know, that the Walgreens checkstands that are utilized, do not actually keep track of money when more than one person signs on to them. Walgreens relies on managers handcounting each till at random intervals to see if there are any shortages at all.
The LP(named Marcelos), accused me directly of stealing money, and when I tried to defend myself, he cut off my sentences by interrupting me. He then claims that he is being professional and trying to save me from prosecution. I also have a co-worker who was treated the same as me, and she was told the same things that I was told as well. He showed me disrespect by claiming that I have no sense of honesty, and stating various things about my characteristics.
I would like to contact Walgreens corporate division, but I highly doubt they would do anything about this issue. I firmly believe that we should all make a stand against Walgreens for such unfair treatment. Personally I do not mind having being written up, at least then its stated that they have concrete proof.

If you're in the right, then fight it in court. When you win, sue them but good. It sounds like they gave you a choice to either walk out the door without an arrest record, or be prosecuted, and you chose to walk. That makes you look guilty as charged.
If you're guilty, the video will show it and end all discussion.
Off topic, but you mentioned you get no child support. You should be pursuing the father for your child's sake, now that you have a lot of free time.

They suck
AUTHOR: Paul - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, August 30, 2005
I worked for Walgreens for 7 mos. Really enjoyed my job, was a trusted and liked employee by all my co-workers. Then out of the blue they had a drug screening and I had nothing to worry about because I don't do drugs. Two weeks went by and all of the sudden I was asked by the manager and asst. manager to join them in the break room. My drug screen had come back positive and their hands were tied. The District manager had called them and told them to fire me and escort me from the property immediately. The manager, asst. manager, and myself were all in shock!! When I asked what could be done they gave me the numbers for the big wigs in Deerfield, Illinois. They told me to call them and they could schedule me another drug screening at my expense. (which is approx. $180) I loved my manager and asst. manager. I then spent my time and money calling these assholes and never even got one response to any of my phone calls. I left messages with secretaries and left voice mail messages on several people's phones. They would not return my phone calls and I guess that's just how they work. Fortune 500 company or not their business practices suck and they really need to be put in their place. I do hope...no, I PRAY!! that they screw the wrong person over and get their asses sued to the hilt.

#6 UPDATE Employee
It's called "At will employment" and it's not just Walgreens
AUTHOR: Mandii - (U.S.A.)
SUBMITTED: Tuesday, May 31, 2005
Pretty much any retail business and countless other busines are "At Will Employers"
Which means, you or the company can, at any time, terminate your employment...BUT it must be within the confines of the law.
Now, essentially, I am the enemy here, because I work for Walgreens and while I am sorry you felt you were wrongfully terminated, I have witnessed so many counts of employee left, I can't really blame Walgreens for being overzealous in their quest for ELIMINATING employee theft.
Walgreens is harsh because employees have made them that way.
In the two years I have worked for Walgreens I have seen:
A front register cashier get fired for stealing cigarettes (caught red handed on tape and admitted it to avoid prosecution)
Another front register cashier for stealing various cosmetics/beauty supplies, also on video, over a long period of time totalling more than a couple hundred dollars.
An assistant manager stole $100 out of a till and was caught in the store in the middle of the night with his car parked out back by the stockroom door.
An employee who kept stealing everyone's food out of the breakroom and fridge. Stealing is stealing, whether it be from your fellow employees or the company.
I don't work for Walgreens in Colorado. I have never even been to Colorado.
But I know here in Portland, OR, while our Loss Prevention Agent is tough and has ZERO TOLERANCE for theft, even if just SUSPECTED, he is PROFESSIONAL.
He does a thorough investigation of any complaint and no termination of employment will take place until he has acquired several written statements from other employees.
I don't doubt that you were wrongfully terminated. It can happen, especially if management/corporate employees are poorly trained and misinformed.
I can tell you this much though.
Here are the two scenarios:
One: The Loss Prevention Agent was crazy
Two: Someone in your store called LP on you, made false allegations that were somehow made to believe true.
These things rarely just "happen" without someone saying something. If you are indeed 100% innocent, then someone at your store is a snake.
And Loss Prevention talks to management prior to interrogation of the employee. If you were flat out accussed and not even asked, then someone in management didn't back you, probably for fear of their own butt. LP can be intimidating to managers with no backbone (which I see is common in Walgreens).
LP doesn't scare me. If LP believes an employee is stealing and finds out another employee there knows even a fraction of nothing that may or may not be related to this employee stealing, they will do everything in their power to get it out of you, in writing. Without directly threatening your job, you will feel threatened.
It's their job to invoke the fear.
I've worked for other retail outlets and it's like that EVERYWHERE.
Because employee theft is high and the more bad experiences an LP Agent has the more tainted they are going to be.
It is my understanding they cannot fire you without concrete proof. Since they keep giving you the runaround about the video, it probably doesn't exist. They probably have signed statements from troublemaking snakes in your store. If you can get even one or two employees to back you and you KNOW you are right, then by all means, fight it.
But if all your former co-workers abandon you, don't be surprised. Most aren't willing to put their own jobs on the line just because you got fired, no matter how great a "friend" they are.
In a company of so many employees, there are bound to be a few sharks among the goldfish.
As much as I enjoy working for Walgreens, I had a pharmacy tech that I had probably spoken 2 words to in my life and barely knew, turn in a written statement to the store manager that I not only threatened her and made her uncomfortable, that I threatened store management personnel and made profane comments in front of her in the office the previous evening (which mind you, was full of people that could testify otherwise), I called the store manager an A-hole apparently and said I wished he was dead. Now her word wouldn't have been enough, so the store manager went to the assistant on duty the night before and told him if he didn't attest that this was true, he would lose his job. So the manager signed falsley saying I said all these horrid things even though I didn't. So I got suspended for 3 days without pay, even though 2 other employees told him I didn't say a word in the office that night. He said to me that the three of us were conspiring together. I almost didn't come back to work and when I did, I requested a transfer, which I got and I have not set foot in that store since.
My new store is the exact opposite. Everyone is too nice.
So Walgreens as a whole isn't necessarily bad. Just some of the people are.
When you called corporate, did you call your local corporate office or did you call the headquarters in Illinois?
If you were done wrong, don't let it go.

#3 UPDATE Employee
It's called "At will employment" and it's not just Walgreens

Comment to Walgreens wrongful termination victims

Dear Annie,
Beleive me on this, I know exactly how you must have felt when the Walgreens so called (500 Fortune company) terminated you for no reason.
Im also one of their wrongful termination victims, and a single mom at the time.
I beleive I was used as a scapegoat, and the corporate individual I had spoke with several times promised to get back with me but yeh sure well its been 3 years ago.
I enjoyed working at Walgreens, and really couldnt beleive they were so harsh.
However Walgreens can terminate allmost any employee they want to, at any time for any reason or no reason at all.
Most employees at the facility I worked for, sign a document when they start, that states Walgreens has the right to terminate employment anytime for any or no reason.
So from what I understand if that document was signed upon employment with the company. Walgreens fortune 500 company can do what they did to you and myself and many other people,
and nothing can be done about it, and walgreens
knows it.
So Ive tried to let the bitterness go, cause its unhealthy to hold grudges and bitterness. It hasnt been easy though, and I havent forgotten the trauma of it all, I was treated so horribly and unfair. But I have forgiven and moved on because thats the best remedy for this kind of treatment. I truly hope your life situation is much happier by now. Who know It could be a blessing in disguise maybe a great new opportunity will come your way or allready has.
Good Luck! To all Walgreen wrongful terminated employees, Life is good without Walgreens!!!

More wrongful action against employees
AUTHOR: Victor - (U.S.A.)

I too have had the wool pulled over my eyes. I worked for Walgreens for 3 1/2 years and made it to Executive Assistant Manager (1 step away from Store Manager). When one day my Store Manager came to me to tell me I was being demoted back to regular Assistant Manager and that my pay was being reduced. Mind you, this comes without ANY warnings about poor performance, nor any poor reviews. I was also told that the change went into effect 2 days prior to when my boss was speaking to me. I checked with the Illionois Labor Laws, and it is illegal to change how, when, where or how much an employee gets paid without first informing them of the change. So in this case, they told me about the change 2 days AFTER the pay decrease went into effect. Needless to say I quit the company, for I could no longer work for a corporation that could treat an employee in that manner. Unfortunately I cannot really afford legal representation, or have gotten the run around on what my legal recourse is. So any attorneys that are willing to work on contingency and may be reading this, please feel free to contact me(victorg000-helpme@yahoo.com). I don't want them to continually get away with this.
