Typically, I stay away from Wal-Mart. I can't stand the people that work there or the people who trash the store and let their kids run wild like they are at a Chuck-E-Cheese. On 09/11/2011, my wife and I moved into a new place. Of all the things we forgot to get, we forgot cooking utensils. I decided to look online for a place that would do in-store pickup. I found what I needed and it just so happened a new Wal-Mart had just opened down the street from where we moved.
I ordered the item and it said it would be available in 4 hours or less. It was 10:00AM when I ordered the set and I still hadn't heard anything when I got home around 6:30PM. I decided to go ahead and go over and check to see what was going on. The store said they didn't have the item in-stock and they were waiting for it to be shipped to them. I explained that I understood that this was an option; however, it wasn't the option I selected. The item showed in-stock in the store online. They argued with me for about 10 minutes insisting they didn't have it and I would just have to wait.
After I got done arguing, I walked over and picked the item up off the shelf and showed it to them. They then said I would just have to buy the item AGAIN and ask Walmart.com to cancel my item.
All I can say is...WOW! WAL-MART and WALMART.COM IS AN ABSOLUTE FAILURE AS A COMPANY!!! No wonder Amazon.com is starting to kick the crap out of you!!!

First, how I choose to shop has no relevance to how you choose to shop. If you want to spend hours going through the aisles of a bricks and mortar store, that is your option.
Typically, I shop for major items online as they tend to be cheaper. The item I purchased this time was something I happened to forget for our new place and needed it. I wanted to be able to walk in, grab it from customer service and leave to get home to my family after work.
As I am sure you know, Wal-Mart lines typically aren't short and most of the stores are trashed. There are a few exceptions to this rule; however, they are rare.
The point of my post is; if you give someone the option to do something...then figure out how to do it! Best Buy and several other major merchants have perfected in-store pick up. You simply walk in to customer service, grab your item and go. It's fast and easy. If I had wanted to wait several days for my item, I would have purchased it from Amazon for cheaper.
The second part of my complaint is the fact that I couldn't just grab the item and have them scan it showing I had picked it up. Instead, I had to buy the item again and wait for them to refund my online purchase.
I understand that you come from a, "go and buy it from the store" generation; however, times change. Just because I choose to do in-store pick up after purchasing something online doesn't make me lazy. It just means that I want to get home and spend more time with my wife and son while spending less time at a place like Wal-Mart......

The OP sounds a bit high strung, all this "trashing the store and kids running around", who cares? Don't sweat the small stuff, go in and buy your items and leave. You are not living there.

Why didn't you just go to a local store, Walmart or whatever, buy what you want and walk out with it? I mean, you had to go out to the store anyway.
I don't understand the 'on-line' fetish. I've only ever bought online when I couldn't find something locally. Might cost a little more but there is much less stress, either they have it or they don't, you can take it home with you if they have it, you're supporting local people etc.
That's what we did before the internet and it seemed to work better.
