While back while still living in Massachusetts, I contacted Wells Fargo local rep to get some information on the mortgage options, available from them. Several months later while checking my credit report, I found out that credit inquiry was run on me by Wells Fargo Mortgage - without my permission, or filling any applications or even giving them SS#. I let it go.

3 weeks ago, having just moved to Colorado, I needed new banking facility. Naturaly, I went to the local branch of the oldest, best known bank - Wells Fargo. The banker I've spoken with had gladly opened checking account for me and enquired if I would like to also get a credit card, for which I appeared to be pre-approved. I said - no, not at this time; I am buying a house within several weeks, and dont want an extra credit check on my credit file before that. She said - sure, I understand.

Imagine my surprise when 2 days after the visit to the bank, I got an e-mail from my credit watch service, informing me there's been a change in my credit report. Wells Fargo Mortgage had checked my credit again - TWICE in 2 days!!. And my credit score DID go down, by 4 points, in fact.

The lady at the branch where I opened the account acted surprised and promissed to investigate and to call me back within an hour. That was a week ago, and she never called me back nor returned my telephone calls. The only way to complain to Wells Fargo is to send them a fax with copy of your credit report page, asking them to write to the credit reporting agency and rectify an "error". I am yet to do that.

Needles to say, I am no longer a customer of Wells Fargo. And if you're planing to apply for credit from anyone, especially if you're planning on applying for mortgage or a loan, stay away from Wells Fargo - they WILL check your credit report without your permission, and your credit score MAY go down. Mine did.

I had something similar. I called Wells Fargo to get rates for an Equity Loan. The following week I receieved a call for me to come in and sign the final paperwork to finalize the loan. They even had someone come out and appraise my home without asking me first. They were able process the loan without my permission using my exsisting Wells Fargo Home Loan information.

I didn't happen, but them processing the loan information (and checking my credit) could have cause my current Equity Loan to fall through.
