I got an electronic call 2 days ago from a woman who identified herself as Julie Smith, said I was in trouble w the IRS and had to call 202 241 8634. I now know that is the number of YMAX ORATION, a major scam operation. I called and spoke to a John NIcholas, who had a strong Indian accent. With lots of numbers and official sounding references, he told me that my husband, whose name he knew, and I owed $4898.32 in back taxes, that the IRS had tried to notify me but they had had no r esponse, and the IRS was about to sieze my assets and call the DMV and have my driver's license revoked.

You know,I panicked, which of course is what they wanted. In the past, from time to time, it HAS happened that we ended up owing some taxes. Also, I h ave read a lot lately about the government's policy of civil forfeiture--the govt. C AN come in and take my money for no reason--so this all just MIGHT have been true.  This guy read 3 formal charges that detailed our guilt and said the IRS was going to sue us immediately.

So I said that if I owed this money, I had it and would be glad to pay it to avoid this catastrophe. John Nicholas then transferred me to his supposed superior officer. This was the p oint when I began to become suspicious, though the new guy, also w a heavy Indian accent, also sounded convincing. I gave him NO numbers or personal information. When he finally explained that I would have to pay in cash, I knew it was not genuine.  I said "This is a scam! You guys really scared me!" and I hung up.

I found YMAX ORATION by Googling the phone number.  It's a big operation, and I'll bet they scare lots of people.
