I purchased a diamond ring for my fiance, after I chose the ring, the salesman said that he needed to put a spacer on the ring to size it temporarily. He proceded to take it into the back of the store, he was gone for 15 minutes.

About a month later, my fiance was having someproblems with the prongs, they were cutting her. We took it into a local jewler and asked for a estimate on repair, saying we wanted to keep the diamond, because it was an excellent stone. (we were sold a VVS1 stone). They said it wasnt a VVS1 stone, but an I2! We went to the company who certified the ring, and they told us it was not the diamond that it was supposed to be, as we had the diamond certificate. We feel the salesman switched the stones, which damaged the prongs.

You know what you have to do...

Fred,

Let me preface this response with a short disclaimer. By giving you this advice I am not stating as fact that the jeweler that took your fianc's ring into the back room switched the stone. However....

Stone switching has become such a prevalent scam in the jeweler industry that, I believe, 20/20 or Primetime Live actually did an expose. I think it was Jane Pauley (sp?) that took her personal jewelry to jewelers in NY and nearly all switched her jewels. It's ugly but profitable for the jewelers.

It is likely that that jeweler switched your stone and that's a shame. This is the reason that established, upstanding jewelers provide an actual picture of every stone purchased.

You know what you have to do; you have to take that jeweler to small claims court. If it's a fact that he is switching stones then it's your civic duty to notify the public with a suit. Then the public will be on notice. If the jeweler is innocent he can have his day in court.

Good Luck,
