This is the second time I have received a phone call on my cell phone from "CBCS" within the past year, claiming that they are "trying to collect a debt." The operator - whose name is impossible to identify - leaves a 1-800 number and a "reference number." To my knowledge, I have no unpaid debt, and I always pay all my bills on time. I will not even call these people back due to what I have read here. I am going to request a free, legitimate credit report to determine if, indeed, I do owe something. And, I will block this number from my cell phone.

Ask yourself these questions

AUTHOR: PabloDiegoJose - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 03, 2012

Becky -- did you have CBCS contact you?  I'm not aware of companies purchasing SSN and putting them on accounts.  I'm not sure why anyone would quote your full SSN over the phone.  You will know if you had a delinquent account.

Here are some to ask:

1)  Did I have an account with the original creditor (OC)?  Did the account go delinquent?  When and how much?

2) Did the collection agency (CA) send me a letter?  Does the business and amount match with question#1?

3) Can the OC in-house collection department verify that it's with the CA?

4) If applicable, does it appear on your credit report?

5) Are you the victim of fraud/id theft?  (Becky, as you state, if anyone can buy your SSN then you might have fraudulent accounts with your name.  Perhaps you should check your credit reports).

Anyone Can Gain Access to Your Name

AUTHOR: Becky - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, October 03, 2012

The fact that any collector addresses you by name means absolutely nothing.  Companies equally as despicable as this one {e.g. USA People Search} will sell every detail of your life, & limitless others, for a single fee of $20 or less to anyone who asks, regardless of whether they are an individual, or a supposedly legitimate collector, providing the credit card clears.

I've had people quote my entire housing history, social security number, name my relatives, including my children, which is reprehensible, etc' extremely personal information...right before they threatened to mail bomb us for not handing over hundreds of dollars instantly, without question for bills I didn't owe.  They, too, tried to convince me that because they had all that information the debt just had to be legitimate.  It's a vile practice that unfortunately works far too often.

That sounds unlikely Sylvia.  Why would they risk their job on doing third party disclosure and to say you are a liar and to keep calling?  The representatives call or their system will, so not everyone gets to listen to your call.

These brainless wonders have been calling my cell phone too!  I just got this cell number 3 weeks ago and right way I get harassing calls from these people,  they leave messages on my voicemail,  which if they bothered to listen to my announcement it had MY name and nowhere near the name they were asking for (I am female and they are looking for a male).  I called them back with all of the information (Person's name they are looking for, some reference number and the amount of the debt of $5,685) to inform them they have the wrong number and person!!  They called me a LIAR and started calling me 2 - 3 times a day and saying since I have this number it is MY responsibility to pay this debt.  I have reported this company.  I sent a recording of all of the voice messages and conversations telling them that they have the wrong person. Going to nail their butts.

EVerything he said is true, when you call your credit card company or even your bank who releases info to you without verifying your identity?? Try that see how that works for you....

ANd CBCS is regulated by FDCPA so we cannot disclose any info to you (b/c we dont know if its really you) your mom, dad, sister, brother , wife , daughter or whoever else, because it is a DBT we are talking about, we can only pass our number along so YOU can call us back and VERIFY the DEBT...

Thank YOU

not all collectors are rude..

AUTHOR: Prlegal08 - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, December 12, 2008

To clarify your assumption sir, collectors get paid well over $12hr, so they dont have a comision or a certain amount of payments they need to hit every month....ALl they do is basically get paid for the time spent with you on the phone.... A lot of times the debt is a few years old, but its legit b/c the company didnt get their equiptment back or your owe late fees or finance charges... If you treat the collector with respect and not yell at them that we are harrasing you (which by law we are not harrasing you) and you will see that we are regular people like you, outside of work and we are willin to hlp out !! And they reason why they might of not sent you a Demand letter is becuse they dont have a DELIVERABLE VALID adress on file, so they will attempt to collect by phone only... You need to speak with them b/c it could be identity theft, wrong social- same name, or simply paid off and the original credit never verified it!!!!

Update

AUTHOR: Pdj - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, September 26, 2008

I would like to add some information:

a) Kathy, did they ask for you by first and last name?

b) The other person said "why didn't the send letter", well if they don't have an updated address how are they going to send VOD (validation of debt)? Kind of hard, right?

c) You claim that CBCS are (paraphrasing) scumbags. I have no relation with CBCS, and I don't work for collections. However, there are going to be good and bad employees & since I do know people who do work in collections I know that their agencies don't report to the credit bureau. Why? Cos it's usually the original creditor (Verizon, Comcast, etc) who does the reporting & they send the account to 3rd party collections.

Moreover, since most people (I would assume) just hang up anyway on the people...what harm is it to just call see what it's about and hang up?

...just an fyi. CBCS is a subsidiary of CBCInnovis, which used to be a heavy-hitter in the credit reporting game. They own Innovis (the 4th big bureau) and used to be affiliated with the other three repositories in certain parts of the country. I don't work there, but I know people who do. I've heard recently that they are going to cease reporting 3rd party collections to TRU, XPN and EFX, at least at some of their branches.

CBCS has good and bad employees just like any other company.

Really--Not CBCS or other 3rd parties not reporting?

AUTHOR: Dmdmanager - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 30, 2008

If pjr or whatever goobledy g**k guy typed in seriously expects us to believe that a "licensed", "reputable" 3rd party collection agency is not reporting to at least one of the 3 major companies, then it (probably because its a coffee clutch of bottom feeders at CBCS) obviously takes each of us that CBCS has harrassed for fools. Which it probably does, because then 3rd party money-grubbers like CBCS wouldn't be leasing worthless debt paper, violating the FDCPA and FCRA as often as they can, and harrassing people that they refuse to verify debts for (all of which they have and are currently doing to me).

Or it might think that its "clever" for companies like CBCS to "not report" because they can get the original supposed creditor to do it--as they are infamous for with Verizon. "OH, we don't report. Verizon Reports. We just collect." Absolute garbage.

Any licensed and reputable collector will report or will have the original company report for them. It costs them zero to 5 dollars, and they don't have to do anything until a consumer files a dispute letter with the bureau.

There's absolutely no reason to speak over the phone to any collector like CBCS unless you have a recorder hooked up and a great debt attorney on retainer. That's why all credit disclosures list that disputes must be in writing--writing is the only way you are protected as a consumer.

The only reason anyone in their right mind would advocate calling those people is because they are one of these bottom feeding collectors who hope that they can get their commission paid for collecting on a dead account--if the account even truly exists.

Good job to you though Kathy! Not all thrid party collectors are bad--some are really good people that are fair and equal to everyone. CBCS isn't one of those. Ignore those creaps!

Oh, hogwash!

AUTHOR: Popcorn - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Wednesday, July 23, 2008

There are plenty of scams involving bottom feeding collection agencies who call people up without bothering to send a written dunning letter first. The only thing someone gets out of returning these calls is a ton of abuse. Nobody has an obligation to leave themselves open to that.

If the bill is legit, the collection agency will send a written demand for payment. The person who filed this report claims not to have a debt and has no obligation to return the call.

Well then you should call up to see what it's about...perhaps it's a bill that you missed...not every debt is reported on your credit.
