On Feb. 2, 2010 a review of my credit card statement turned up multiple (five) incidences of a $13 charge by FedEx. When looking deeper, it was labeled as a 'customer level charge' so I called to inquire as to just WTF that meant. As it turns out, when you sign the adhesion contract by clicking the 'I Agree to the Terms and Conditions' radio button necessary to ship, you are agreeing that you have FULLY read and understood the thirty some pages of legal boilerplate that is the FedEx Shippers Agreement and that you are cognizant that a $13 charge will be levied for them to come and pick up a parcel, even if they are only doing so while delivering the days drop to your multiple-resident dwelling (i.e. a high rise apartment complex). While the manager I spoke to agreed that such a charge should be disclose AT THE TIME YOU CREATE A SHIPPING LABEL, he did not credit back anything and thus I closed my account. I would encourage anyone reading this to do the same until this atrocious practice is curbed as it is borderline fraud to sneak in these charges on the back end.

He's right, the cost isn't $13...

AUTHOR: Mark L. - (USA)

POSTED: Wednesday, February 03, 2010

...but the fee is. There is significant time involved for drivers to walk between units, climb stairs, wait for residents to respond, transaction time, carry what ever packages are involved often requiring multiple trips to the truck, plus the weight/transport time with an additional sort at the hub. Making the statement, "Syncing the logistics of picking up while doing the days drop off does not cost them $13.", is both spewed out of pure ignorance and is also accurate. The cost of multiple pickups costs more than $13. Apartments are the most tedious and time consuming locations of courier service. In addition, it is virtually impossible to take a fully loaded out for delivery truck and expect it to have room for any additional pick up volume, not to mention the disruption of organizational flow of the internal sorting of the packages with respect to delivery locals. This aspect is the obvious factor as to why delivery or pick ups are done by completely different trucks, or at least why deliveries are A.M. and pick ups are P.M. when same trucks are used in a common route. But then, I'm sure Mike already knew this. Obviously, if any utility or delivery company only had one single request in an apartment or neighborhood, the overhead cost of doing so would far exceed $13.

Since by Mike's rational, it costs less than $13 for a pick up of any number of apartment calls at a single address, then who should pay that pick up fee? Nobody? Or perhaps the first person that scheduled a pickup, and everyone else is free since they're there anyways? Bet Mike would be having yet another tantrum if those 'logistics' showed that he was the first person to schedule at that apartment address. And, say, shouldn't there be a reduced fee if there's more than on pick up on the same street (it actually is already averaged and calculated at the current fee)? How about more than one business pick up at a shopping mall (first business to call for a pick up gets the mall bill)? Could it be that Mike expects to void all variables and time involved for each unique pick up is indicative as to why he can't understand the same? How would Mike feel if his employer (hypothetically) was told to make deliveries, then was told he'd be paid the same whether it's a single ground floor front entry business, or a high rise apartment with ten deliveries/pickups for his full delivery truck? Would Mike's hearty response be, "No prob bossman...I work for free in apartments just to make everybody happy!"?

Perhaps a much more likely assumption would be that Mike is having difficulty affording his wonderful brick and mortar skyline view. While simultaneously gloating over an arguable view preference, he's also desperately whining about someone charging him thirteen bucks for a standard service that he demands for free. This service is easily verifiable in both Yup...smart guy, this Mike. Very wealthy too, no doubt. (Who wants to bet he'll not only retaliate with a response, but will also try to define his stable financial position?)

Though Mike says he won't allow another to express opinion about the hassles of crummy apartment delivery, he does insist that everyone should know what he charges to do people's mothers. For about three seconds, I gave him the respect for offering some service for free to some other party. Just to make it clear to other readers, Mike's insinuation for a free service is 'doing my Mother'. It's been years since I've witnessed that adolescent humor (which typically fizzles out in junior high for most people) use that irrational nonsense. Mike is not doing anyone's mother. If he persists on that statement, however, then readers should know that he is claiming to offer the free service of copulating with my embalmed mother whom passed away about five years ago. I wonder if he really imagines enjoying it that much that he needs to brag about it and, by the way, how long did it take Mike to get into the crypt?

Just a word of advice: If ever in TX, Mike might want to avoid calling another man "mate". If Mike prefers to do so, his apparent sexual preferences will deviate. And what aspect of a credit card statement needs to be 'looked up in a dictionary'??

...Mark; that's what I do for free. Syncing the logistics of picking up while doing the days drop off does not cost them $13. Not even close. As for their 'investment', etc., etc.; every time fuel goes up .20 their surcharges go up the same. I have no problem with this as it is UP FRONT and CLEARLY MARKED AS SUCH, not added onto your credit card statement in the furtive manner (go look it up in the dictionary). As far as 'crumby' apartments, people from Austin don't get to toss stones at people with a NYC skyline view mate...

So what do YOU do for free?

AUTHOR: Mark L. - (USA)

Did you actually expect a person on anyone's payroll to drive a large diesel truck special to you for no fee? You didn't ever wonder about the costs of the service, and now blame other people for their investment to your needs? Since you may have another resident in a crummy apartment getting a delivery, or perhaps also shipping, you expect the service to you should be free? When is it YOUR turn to pay for the work you demand AND the other peoples needs in your apartment? Is this complaint a joke?? Could you also be one of those types that under weights and sizes packages, receives an up charge to actual specifications, then complains about it? Say, why don't you yourself drive your shipments to a FEDEX or UPS location and save the pickup fee? Oh...what's that you say? That would cost you time and money? You have time to tap out a complaint in this blog site, but don't have time to ask basic questions or read a simple contract?!

Bet you consider yourself a pretty smart person, don't you?
