I rented a car to drive from chicago to Grand Rapids MI.  I had the car for roughly 30 hours.  The quoted charge for a day was $155, which is a lot because I wasn't bringing it back to the same location.  Well, since I went 4 hours past 24 hours, they charged be $283!  Besides the rediculous upcharge, the car was really loud and uncomfortable.  I normally drive a little volkswagon so it's not like I was expecting luxury.  My ears hurt the tires were so loud.  What a bad experience.  It really hurts to rent from Hertz.  Don't do it!

Still rediculous

AUTHOR: Joe - ()

POSTED: Sunday, June 16, 2013

I'm sorry, but to be charged and extra $130 for keeping a crappy car 4.5 hours extra (sorry about my math, checking closer it was 4.5 hours), is still rediculous, even if there are other companies who do it.  It makes the customer (me) feel like the company is going to take any opportunity it can to suck as much money out of me as possible instead of being fair, especially when that up-charge potential isn't explained at the point of rental.  How about a regular daily rate (like less than $50), and a single charge for returning to a different location??  No, that would be to fair.  Sorry, i'm not going back.

You were originally quoted a rate for $155 for ONE day.  You said you had it for ROUGHLY 30 hours.  Well it must be real rough because 24 hours plus 4 hours is only 28 hours.  So I guess your 4 hours over is actually 6 hours.

It doesn't matter what car rental company you go with but if you go over the time you are charged extra.  Most will charge you an hourly rate, but once you hit 4-5 hours it then becomes the "daily" rate.  Since you were doing a One-Way rental your daily charge is higher, and so is your overage.
