My wife noticed a charge on our JCP credit card statement for Fun family Rewards for $9.95 yesterday. She had noticed it before, but didn't question it because she thought it was connected to the JCP customer rewards program. She wasn't in the store on the day of the charge so she called the toll free number. Their representative, Leah, told her that I had signed up for the program when I ordered something on-line in March of 2007. I have made several on-line purchases but don't remember ever signing up for anything that would cost me $9.95/month. As a result we have probably paid nearly $600 for something we didn't want, didn't know we had and never used. Leah told me that I had probably received a welcome package explaining the program and how to cancel right after we signed up. When I told her that I never received such an email, her response was maybe it went into your junk email! I have never received any communication from the company on the program either by email or by US mail in the past 5 years. Leah agreed to refund 4 months of the charges then tried to sell me more. I tried to call JCP to see what I had bought in 2007 that triggered the rip-off and to complain about the program. They could not go back that far, but did tell me that they dropped the program two years ago. JCP was one of our favorite stores, but we are very seriously considering never shopping there again.

Since 2007?

I once had the same experience that I signed up for a program I didn't expect it was charged. They advertised the program as if it was a free-of-charge and did not mention (or clearly stated) the cost of it per month but rather showing many freebies. At the time, I only had my credit card for a couple months. As a result, I saw the charge the next billing cycle. I immediately cancelled it.

If you discovered about this charge a long time ago (at most a couple months after the charge started), I would completely agree with you for the rip off. However, if you (and your wife) let it go this long, it is actually your responsibility and cannot call it out as a rip off because you (and your wife) let it happen...

So you accidentally signed up for a program when purchasing something online, which is incredibly easy to do. THEN you don't bother reading your credit card statements for FIVE years!? I hesitate to call this a ripoff on JCP, yuo very well may have signed up for the program. With the attention you pay to your credit card statement, it wouldn't surprise me that you missed an email about it.

What you should learn from this:

Read your credit card statement every month to make sure there are no unauthorized purchases. If there are, call that month and have them removed. If you had bothered reading one of your statements back in 2007, you would have stopped this before you spent $600 on it. The only ripoff here is where you ripped yourself off.
