I currently work as a seasonal cashier for KMart. Last week, a co-worker asked me if we could switch shifts. The HR Manager approved it and everything was fine. I called out of work 6 hours in advance and the manager on duty told me that the coworker who had the original shift and I were both going to receive infractions.

So, a few weeks ago I read my schedual wrong and didn't show up for work when schedualed. No supervisors called me and asked where I was, because if they did I would have shown up and apologized profusely for being late and misreading the schedual. I did not get lectured, written up or anything for pulling the unintentional no-call-no-show, but when I call out of work 6 hours in advance, they write up my co-worker and myself?

I've never been written up for anything, and this is definatly not my first job. I stay late and offer to stay late every single shift that I work. I am always moving, always working, only been late twice the entire time that I've worked there. The managers messed up and schedualed me to work during one of my drill days and I told them I couldn't work that day until after drill, and a manager gave me a bunch of grief over it.

The sad part is, in general I enjoy what I do there. My supervisors are great, always helpful, patient and pleasant to be around. My co-workers in general are great too, we help each other out and manage to tolerate/enjoy each other's company while still getting the job done. Even the customers are pleasant, most of the time.

I have a feeling that not every single employee there gets infractions for calling out, because I didn't receive one for pulling that unintentional no-call-no-show. If he is going to write me up for calling out of work, then he should go through the schedual and write up every single other employee that has. Equal treatment, equal punishment. Maybe he is doing this because I am seasonal and he wants an excuse to not consider keeping me when the season is over with. I don't know, but I want to work for a place that praises and condemns everyone equally, not only when they feel like it. I don't think that this KMart is that place...at least while that manager is still there.

Your no call/no show was probably an oversight by the mgr.

It sounds like your mgr has other things on his mind (other employees/ Xmas season responsibilities etc.) to be that concerned about you. That probably means your job is safe.

Just come in on time, keep your abscences to a minimum and check your schedule regularly. You'll be fine. In fact, after a while you'll see that there are better places to work than K-Mart and you'll find a better job.

Let's reorder your report based on the actual timeline. Perhaps it will become clear to you as to why you got written up.

"So, a few weeks ago I read my schedual wrong and didn't show up for work when schedualed." - NO SHOW # 1 - No Action taken by management

"Last week, a co-worker asked me if we could switch shifts. The HR Manager approved it and everything was fine. I called out of work 6 hours in advance"
- NO SHOW #2 - Manager is going to write you up.

It appears that they gave you a pass on the first one, but the second time they were going to write you up. This is not a RipOff, just how business works. You are getting too tied up into what happens with other people. If you are as good of a worker as you say, then as long as you show up you will be fine. It does not matter what other people are doing. If you start taking the "politics" of the workplace seriously you need to move on.
