I signed up for Lady of America in New Port Richey back on 9/25/02 with a three year contract. I was very unhappy with the gym and within 6 months stopped going, but still paid for it as I was under contract and reading the contract there was not a way to cancel it.
On 9/1/05 I requested the membership be canceled as the contract would be up on 9/25/05. I was advised it could not be canceled at that time as I didn't give 30 days notice. I then, wrote a notice to have it canceled and they demanded I turn in my card. I was told it would be canceled effective 10/25/05.
Since then I have called, stopped in, written to the home office and they still will not cancel my membership. I have been hung up on, told there was no one there to help me, no management available, that the account has been canceled and every other lie they could come up with. I contacted my bank and they advised me they could do nothing to help me as I approved the money to be taken monthly.
The local gym has changed hands a number of times and every time I talk to them, they tell me to contact the home office. I call the home office, they either hang up on me, tell me to contact the membership serves at National Fitness or lie and say it will be canceled.
Due to timing issues, the last payment they tried to get didn't go through. Today I received a letter from National Fitness demanding 83.47 or they will do whatever they have to to get the money.
I am so fed up with all of this. I want my 22 months of payments back, plus bank charges. Nothing I have tired has help, so if anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. At this time, I can't afford a lawyer so I am stuck doing this on my own.

Due to other suggestions on this companies complaints, I contacted the CEO of Lady of America. I am happy to say they have responded, within 5 days of me mailing the CEO a letter and I am dealing with a very nice gentleman that at least has been able to get my membership canceled. They are reviewing the paperwork I sent them to see about a refund. At least they are doing something to help me and responded to me!
As for National Fitness, they have done nothing other then threaten me even more with collections. I still have not received anything other then letter today saying I called (which I didn't, I emailed them from their site) and that I requested a copy of my contract. Again something I did not ask for. I requested it to be canceled, requested a name and email address for someone in management as I did not want to deal with the rude CSR's again. I also felt with this company, dealing with them either through email or US mail would be better as I would have proof of contacting them yet again.
I'll let you all know how things turn out.
To anyone dealing with National Fitness due to them billing for Lady of America, I would fully suggest to contact the home office of Lady of America in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
