Portfolio Recovery Trying to collect on a 12 year old cellphone bill. That's right a bill from 2001. Norfolk Virginia

Early in 2011 I started getting calls from Portfolio Recovery attempting to collect a debt for an account at US Cellular that had been closed since 2001. They claimed they had been trying to contact me for years, yet I had been living at the same address for nearly 5 years after the closing of the account and then moved directly accross the street for the remaining 7 years, not to mention we had a landline phone with the same number from 2000 until 2010.

I have no idea how they got my current cell phone number but they harass me on it at least two times a day even after being informed that this is a cell phone which was never given to any of the creditors on this account because i do not own the account I currently have my cell phone on it is a family plan in my mother-in-law's name. So how they connected me to a cellphone i dont even pay for is beyond me.

When told to produce proof that I owe this money they get an attitude and ask if I am refusing to pay my debts at which time I tell them yes because after 12 years no one on either side has financial documents proving that I owe the debt. I dont have the same bank account nor any cancelled checks or staements that far back since you are only required to keep them for what 7 years. They then hung up on me.

When this began in 2011 I read into the collection laws ,I am no lawyer but, from what I understand they have no legal right to harass me any way since the statute of limitations on a debt is 5 years in Iowa. They responded that just means we can't take you to court but we can call and harass you everyday until its paid.
