Radio Shack Charged for no service O'Fallon, Missouri
*Consumer Comment: I agree with you.
*Author of original report: charged for no service
* : Not refundable
The battery died on my Palm Pilot Tungsten C, I contacted Palm, they said Radio Shack was the place to go to have it replaced. I went to the store on highway K in O'Fallon MO and they said no problem, we'll send it in, give us a $20.00 deposit. I got the unit back with a report that they were unable to install a new battery, BUT NO REFUND of my deposit. Their District Manager said Palm refuses to sell them batteries, I told him they were available on line would he like to know where to get them? -- He wasn't interested and refused a refund.

Neal is full of it.
RS took the $20 under false pretenses. They said they could get the battery replaced. It's not the consumer's problem if RS could not live up to their promise. They should not only give him his money back, but should also give him an apology for promising him something they could not deliver.
On top of that, they should be embarrased that they can't figure out where to get a Palm battery. They are one of the largest electronic retailers in the country.

Neal, you missed the point. The salesman told me "no problem to change the battery, we need a $20.00 down payment. When the unit came back, their report said "batteries not available" & I was told "no refund on the down payment". I spoke with the District Manager, he told me Palm would not sell them batteries. I told him the batteries were available on line for $15.00, would he like to know where Radio Shack could obtain them? His reply, "we're not interested" !!!!! ??? Now tell me, is this not only a rip off but also lousy service??

Not refundable

The $20.00 is a non-refundable deposit that is paid to cover shipping the item to and from the repair center, and to cover some of the cost to have the tech look at the item. Not really a rip off here. Normally at my store we tell people they have to put down a $20.00 non-refundable deposit.
