I called Roto Rooter to clean our drains because our washing machine was backing up. The technician completed the job and we paid $365. That evening, we noticed that we had no hot water and that our hot water unit was not on. I tried to turn it back on w/ no luck. I called Roto Rooter and they sent a different technician out.
He said that the thermocoupling unit needed to be replaced and that it was just a coincidence that our 5 year old unit that we've ever had a problem with stopped working the day that their technician came and did work on our plumbing. He also said that in order to do the repair, the water heater needed to be completely drained and it would cost an additional $300+.
A few days after the second technician replaced the thermocoupling unit, we had no water again! The flame was off and again I tried to turn it back on with no luck. This time, I noticed that the unit was now leaking. We called Roto Rooter again, the same technician came out and said that now the entire unit needed to be replaced-at our expense and it would cost several more hundred dollars. He said the leaking was just coincidental and had nothing to do with his "repair" work. He also said he would call the water heater manufacturer and find out the warranty information and call us back. He did not call us back and he left us with leaky, broken water heater.
I called the company again and left a message for the manager. I called back a few days later and left another message for the manager when he didn't call back. When he finally contacted me several days later, he told me that the leak was not their fault and therefore they were not liable for the repair. And of course he said that they would be more than happy to come out and repair it at our expense.
I have filed a formal complaint with the BBB.
Long story short- unless you like to throw your money away- STAY FAR AWAY from this company!!!!

You do not have to drain the water heater to replace a thermocouple. It takes about 5 minutes to replace and can be purchased for under $20.
The symptoms for a bad thermocouple is 'inability to get the pilot light to stay lit. I am assuming your water heater is gas since it has a thermocouple.
Try going to your hardware store next time and they will show you how to do it. A simple adjustable wrench and screwdriver is all you need.
