My son went to Office Depot to purchase a new laptop computer here in Hawaii (where we have resided for over 40 years). He had just opened a new checking account (@40 days old) and had MORE THAN SUFFICIENT FUNDS in the account to cover the check. He was declined by the store (via Telecheck) for no reason. When we called the 800 number provided, all we could get was an automated voice stating if we wanted additional info we would have to write to a PO Box in Houston with checking account info, driver's license number and social security number. THEN they would send us a letter stating why they declined the check.
The clerk asked my son if he had a debit card (for the same account-which he did) and the transfer went through smooth. She also said that they have "problems" with Telecheck all the time and most of the declines are "bogus". However since Office Depot is a national chain, they are stuck with the service.
NOW.....with all the mail fraud and ID theft, would you mail your "life" to a PO Box in Houston?
When I spoke to my bank this morning, they informed me that they have "dumped" Telecheck from their services for the main reason as they have had too many "bougus" problems with them.
Who does this company think they are???? SOMEONE needs to file a class action suit against them as well as have a "real live" person to talk to about this.
Thanks for letting me vent....will be pursuing this with the Hawaii State Attorney General's office.

This may sound dumb

But I think they like nice round numbers. Like in increments that they sell their gift cards.
I had an issue with one my prepaid cards and they told me when they run the card it tries to authorize in certain dollar increments. Most of the time the minimum purchase is $5 at most stores. I don't know what these people know that we don't but I wish they would tell us.

Opposite Telechek Position

I should note the opposite to Telechek costs - if they accept a check and it returns, they are liable for the check loss and not the merchant. They are providing protection to the merchant for "theft of service/product by check fraud" while the merchant doesn't have to write-off the loss - Telechek incurs the loss and the responsibility to recover the lost funds.

Why Telecheck declined your check
AUTHOR: David - (U.S.A.)

Telecheck and some other check processors are not set up to ping your checking account to see if the account is open and funded. All the service does is check its database of other Telecheck merchants to see if you the check writer has written bad checks to other Telecheck merchants in the last few years. If you have, you'll de declined everywhere that accepts Telecheck regardless of your account balance. Because your son had a new checking account, the scanner likely picked up the low check number and declined based on newer accounts having higher risk of problems. Further, Telecheck often also assigns a percentage rating to its merchants whereby perhaps 15% of transactions will decline even with no negative history because... Telecheck charges merchants for declines so it's a profit for them most merchants aren't aware of.
