I got this phone and plan for my 22 year old son to use. We had no problems until the plan ended and Verizon stopped sending itemized bills. My son's average monthly bill was around $60 for the whole time so we thought the plan was sufficient to meet his needs. 3 months after the plan ended, his girlfriend moved out of state and his calling increased.
He was under the impression that if she called him, it wouldnt come off his alotted time. He also thought he still had free nights and weekends. In a very short amount of time, the charges became astonomical. $500 then $700. The bills hadnt been itemized since March but we werent aware of a problem until the big bills came in.
My son has a chronic mental illness and at times is suicidal. He lives in subsidized housing and is managed by the Denver Mental Health system. He needed to have a phone for his own safety. The bill is in my name which means that Verizon will not talk to anyone but myself about this bill even though I never used the phone and my son was paying the bills. I have written to Verizon online but got no response.
Then they started calling and I returned the call and explained the situation and they would only come down on the bill by $300 IF I signed a new contract. My son's phone was overheating and was practically worthless and he thought he could find a better deal with his girlfriends plan so he didnt want to do that. So Verizon cut off his phone and during the 5 weeks that his phone was off, added another $400 to his bill. When I asked them how that could be if they disconnected his phone and they said it was only "temporarily disconnected" and they added late fees.
Does this sound right? I gave Verizon written permission online and by phone to speak with my son, his case manager and a counselor to try to set up a payment plan. They have refused to even talk to these people and call me at least two times a day. I can no longer access their online communications. The man I talked to last week was rude and wouldnt let me speak.
I had sent a $25 payment last week while I waited for them to send me itemized bills from April until Sept to see if everything was legitiment. He did say the payment was received but they immediately sent the account to him and have not sent the itemized statements.
I also looked over the service agreement that I signed in March, 2002 and there are many boxes left blank. It doesnt have a term length checked. There isnt any information about the phone I got with the plan. this bill is now over $2000 and he hasnt used the phone since August and we have yet to see what the itemized charges were.
I have filed a report with the Colorado Attorney General's office which sent a report to the BBB in New Jersey.

Collection Agency is nicer than Verizon!

I just spoke with a representative at ER Solutions and while it was painful to have to give in, so to speak, they were very professional, courteous, understanding, and I gained a wealth of information, non of which,I might add, wasnt perfectly legal for them to provide to me.
We have set up a payment plan which is interest free, no late fees, and no early payoff penalties. This is a big improvement over what Verizon was pulling. I am not happy about being forced to make payments on a bills that Verizon refuses to verify with detailed statements
I was told that several months ago Verizon decided not to send out detailed statements. There thinking was that if someone wanted details they could go online to get them or write and request that Verizon sent them FOR A FEE. First of all, not everyone has access to online service.
Yes, they can go to the library but how many will actually do that every month? Verizon counts on the fact that a big percentage of people are going to see it as just another hassle to deal with and go ahead and blindly pay the darn bill without question.
Plus in my case, since the phone was turned off I no longer am allowed access to the Verizon online services AND I was told that Verizon will NOT provide the documentation I requested in writing. This is evidentally their MO. I was told this information by the collection agency service rep.
So I have no way of knowing what the exact charges were for the months of April through Sept. This is just another example of a big business bullying the consumer and then hiding behind legal skirts.
I was told that now that this bill has gone to collections I must pay or it will affect our credit rating. BUT I do still have the right to dispute the charges while I am paying for them. And I have a very small chance of getting the documentation I need to tell me whether I have a dispute or not!
As for the previous rebuttal message, I will say that after two years of service I no longer remember the specifics of the plan and when I tried to pull up this calling plan (DigitalChoice 100 or D11L as said on the service agreement) on Verizon's website, it wasnt even there.
I know this is a result of stupidity on my part. This was the first time I had bought into a cell phone plan and it was for my son. Like I said before, his average bill for two years was $60 and we had no problems. I protest the billing practices put forth by Verizon Wireless as a matter of principle! This is sneaky and deceptive billing with the potential to make lots of money for Verizon and the consumer has no recourse but to pay up.
Well, I will start paying to save my credit record but I will continue to dispute Verizons Billing practices until I'm blue in the face!
I urge everyone who does business with Verizon to get online and get your detailed statements every month. Take the time to check that info thoroughly and make sure you know your plan, especially if the phone will be used by someone other than yourself. Dont get complacent or you run the risk of getting SKROOD!

Too bad about your son's condition and your situation. I don't like Verizon but in this case they are right. You can see a free itimized bill online unless your phone gets disconnected. But the phone is YOURS not your son's even if he uses it. YOU signed the contract. Besides,if the phone was only for emergencies, why was he calling his girlfriend all the time? And another thing, why did he have the "impression" that incoming calls were free. This is a classic example of getting a phone for someone and not knowing what you are doing. They even gave you a break on the bill which they never do for most people! Just pay the bill and switch to Cincular or get a pre-paid phone next time.
