I have a Tomtom GPS satnav which they completely and utterly failed to support. On 6 April 2019, there was a "rollover" event in the GPS clocks that causes a GPS unit to fail to perform adequately. Tomtom CLAIMED to have an update to fix this problem.

Instead, their software to perform the update failed utterly to work with modern computer operating systems, resulting in a failure to up date. Despite repeated queries to their customer support for help, absolutely NO help was forthcoming. Instead, the attempted to entice me into buying yet another Tomtom device under the guise of an "update". That is not going to happen.

I will not knowingly buy merchandise from a company that utterly fails to stand by their products, and who instead attempts to sell me yet more substandard products. I will have to replace my satnav, but when I do, it will be with a product from ANY company other than Tomtom.

Yes, that is the "rollover event", and it will certainly affect all "older" GPS devices, and will continue to do so every 19 years or so as the next rollover event occurs. It's not a manufacturer error, it's a function of the GPS satellite constellation programming. The rollover event is not the issue, inability to update the device to account for it is.

TheGPS unit is a TomTom Start. I suppose "older" is a relative term - it was purchased in late 2014, and last updated in late 2017 or early 2018, when I had an older computer.

The update software provided for download is TomTom Home. I presume it's a file manager sort of software rather than the update itself, but cannot get to the update because the TomTom Home software will not install on a Windows 64 bit system. Since nearly all modern computers on the Windows platform are 64 bit, this discrepancy mystifies me.

This is the error I get: "The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you're running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64 bit) version of the program, and then contact the software publisher."

It is a Windows 7 64-bit computer. Contacting the software publisher (TomTom) has, to date, produced exactly zero results other than the suggestion to purchase a new device. If the device cannot be updated, there is no incentive for me to buy yet another one, that also will not be updateable. They might just as well have suggested to me that I search for and buy a 32 bit computer to run the software on. Either way, obsolete is obsolete, and this GPS device should not be obsolete after a mere 4 years.

Rollover Event?

AUTHOR: Robert - (United States)

POSTED: Monday, May 06, 2019

When you reference the "Rollover" Event, you are referencing somthing that may affect every "older" GPS regardless of manufacturer.  The issue has to do with how GPS Units store week Information.

Based on this and other phrases it seems as if your GPS is an older unit, and one you have not performed any updates on in the recent past(or at all).

So what is the specific model and when did you purchase it.   Just how did the update utterly fail to work with modern computer operating systems?
