In June of 2023, my 2016 Range Rover Supercharged was listed on Turo Rideshare to generate some additional income.  On or around August 18, 2023, a Turo Guest rented and drove my vehicle out of state.  During which time the coolant light came on. The driver was instructed by Turo to pull the vehicle over at a safe location and wait for a tow truck.  Once the truck was secured by the tow company, contracted by Turo, someone on their end made the decision to drive my vehicle back to Chicago instead of towing it back.

During transport my vehicle caught fire resulting in total loss. Turo blamed the towing company and never honored the claim nor their policy to cover future earnings if a total loss occurred.  My personal insurance company did not cover rideshare so I could not pursue a claim with them. Fortunately, my finance company had an additional insurance policy on the vehicle, which only covered the fair market value of the vehicle. As a direct result of Turo's negligence and breach of contract and total disregard for their fiduciary responsibility to their host I was damaged. I have attempted to communicate with Turo on several occasions to resolve this matter privately with no success.

Oh yes...

Stating the obvious means I must work for them. No, I don't work for them. What you paid for the vehicle or what you still owed on it is absolutely irrelevant. The number that matters is what it was worth the day it was destroyed. And every car depreciates, perhaps with the exception of some ultra-rare exotics or antiques. Yours does not fall into that category. From your description, it is pretty clear the car did not suffer a total loss while being driven by the renter. It experienced a mechanical breakdown and then later caught on fire while it was being transported back. So Turo's insurance would not apply here. Also, how did you determine it was being driven if you haven't even physically seen the car? I also don't see anything about Turo reimbursing anyone for a year worth of rental income. They have a plan that will pay you the previous 60 days income, but even that is something you have to buy separately. Likewise, the best plan AAA has offers 200 miles of towing, so I believe your are mistaken in thinking that your membership covers 1000.

Fyi: My vehicle's service record with Land Rover was/are excellent. No different from my BMW 7 and 6 Series. Though the fair market value of the car was $3500 less than I owed I invested over 38 mths of my hard-earned cash into the vehicle with the plan of one-day owning it or trading it in. To the tune of $10K down at purchase and $750 per mth thereafter my investment was beyond the depreciation that every automobile sustains when it's driven off the lot. (But I guess I'm supposed to just chalk that up as a loss?)

Frankly, I don't know what happened to my vehicle. Everyone involved (Turo/Driver/Towing Company) is playing the blame game. The towing company reported the car was being towed. Through my own investigation I found out that it was being driven. Also, I have not physically seen my vehicle since the accident because of the investigation Turo's insurance company launched.

Regarding Towing, I've had AAA for 15 years and with my platinum status they would have covered 1000 miles of towing at no cost to me. I'm sure I could have handled the balance. It was Turo who chose to follow their own policy of securing the vehicle and arranging tow services.

And, finally as a part of the Host agreement Turo offers. If a host suffers total loss while their vehicle is in use by a Turo Guest. Toro guaranteed they would cover a year’s future earnings.

Fair market value

By your own account, you got paid the value of the vehicle. You have been made whole and have no further claim against anyone. If you were upside down on the vehicle, that's your problem. Your actual damages are equal to the value of the car on the day it was destroyed. Even if you could get someone else to pay you, you would owe that money to the insurance company (it's called subrogation). Furthermore, it sounds like the breakdown and fire was a result of poor maintenance. Low coolant doesn't normally cause a car to catch on fire. I don't know why it was driven, but if you had a car towed across the country you would probably have a towing bill that exceeds the value of the car.
