Ace Hardware advertised a $ 100,- statement credit for new "Ace Hardware credit card applications". I asked the cashier at the store "What is the catch ?" and she told me "there is no catch, you just have to apply for the card" then she gave me an application form.
At home I decided to submit the information electronically to US Bank, rather than mailing the form in. I was approved for the card but never received the $ 100,- statement credit. When I called US Bank i was told "You didn't qualify because you didn't apply in store".
Nowhere it was explained that I had to leave my personal and confidential information like my social security number with a store employee - Actually, it is not ACE Hardware which approves a customer for credit and issues him a credit card, they would only submit his information to US Bank. In my case I submitted the information myself - what difference does it make ? The information that was given in Ace Hardware's advertisement was deceptive and did not go into details.
I believe that this was done on purpose in order to create a reason for not honoring the $ 100,- statement credit offer.

Giving your social security number to unknown store employees

Actually I applied at the store and was given a form paper. The store did not tell me that I had to give it back to them and that I had to provide the store with my personal and confidential information.
Apparently someone from the store would have taken the information from the paper form and submitted it electronically to US Bank. A hardware store is not a bank and is not supposed to know condidential information like social security numbers of customers. Since Ace Hardware does not make a credit decision or provide credit, it is absolute nonsense to demand that a customer provides the store with personal and confidential information.

I know that it is frustrating to apply for an offer and not get it , as I've been through that , but you have to be sure to comply with all the requirements . These Ace offers - and I've applied for more than one problem free - do state that they are for instore applications , thus in this case I do not believe that a "ripoff report" warning is warranted - just a warning to carefully comply with all the written requirements , no matter what a cashier , phone , or chat representative tells you is "ok" .
