AIU Online University, American Intercontinental University Wrongfully charged for tuition. We were told to stick it out and see and we wouldn't be charged, but we were. Now our credit has been destroyed. Ripoff Internet

Last year my husband and I decided to sign up for on-line courses through AIU to fit our busy schedules. We applied and were accepted and began making the appropriate steps to enroll. My husband is in the military, so we also took the appropriate steps to get tuition assistance through them. After all our financial aid was completed except for the military, we found out that AIU was way out of the military price range for funding. I called our counselor, Lori Hall, and asked to be withdrawn. I made sure to do this way before the deadline to withdraw, so we wouldn't be charged any fees. My counselor informed me that my husband and I should stay in a little longer and she would try to work things out so we could get funded. She also verbally promised me that if we went past the deadline to withdraw and still needed to get out, she would take care of it so we wouldn't be charged. We were told to go ahead and begin courses, so we did. We completed one assignment before we withdrew. Well, needless to say, the military never pulled through and we had to withdraw. I tried to get a hold of Lori several times, but she never returned my calls. It's been right at a year now and we are still suffering from this. AIU sent us to collections where they say I owe $1,200 and my husband owes $500. The collection agency threatened to garnish our wages, so I had to call them and set up payments of $50 a month. I had no choice. I do not owe this debt, and have tried talking to any one I could to get it erased. To this day if I try to reach Lori Hall, she will not return my phone calls. I have exhausted all options I have, so I guess I'm just stuck with a mark against my husband and I on our credit and a $1700 bill I do not owe.
