Due to current circumstances I am unable to pay a debt to Washington Mutual. I also am disputing the amount. Washington Mutual first sold the debt to Philllips & Cohen. I sent them the FTC letter and they promptly sold my account to AllianceOne. AllianceOne is amazingly rude. I already sent them a letter and they are continuing to call. Apparently, I sent it to the "wrong" address. Usually they call 4 or 5 times a day on both the home line and my cell phone for a total of 10 times a day. Today, I attempted to speak with the debt collector and get the "correct address". He refused to give it to me, called me a thief, a dead beat, a loser, a waste of humanity, etc., etc. He said, "I will not give you any information because you are a dead beat attempting to avoid paying your debt."
Well, the two of us shouted on the phone at each other for a while until I realized the absurdity of it and could hear him and others laughing in the background. Apparently he had put me on speakerphone. I gather these collectors amuse themselves by being rude and getting people angry. I hung up and called back for the address, I was hung up on again. I called back a third time and was given an address that didn't match anything I could find online. Apparently, the collectors are instructed to give misinformation.
I will resolve this directly with Washington Mutual when I am able. I will not make any payments to third party collectors. I have also started filing the on-line complaint with the FTC each time the people call. I am headed out today to send a certified, return-receipt letter requesting that AllianceOne stop all communication with me. It will be interesting to see if they sell my account to yet another company.
It is absolutely useless in attempting to speak to these people. Do not trust them. Resolve the issue directly with the company to whom you owe the debt.

They've heard of the FDCPA all right

They know exactly what the FDCPA is, and if the complaints filed include the name of the collector and the time of the call, Mr. Chuckles might find himself out of a job.
They train their collectors fairly thoroughly on the FDCPA, mostly so collectors know how far they can push without going over the line. Yes, they do find ways to enjoy themselves at the debtor's expense. They value aggressive types who can make debtors cry and goad them into fights. The namecalling isn't 'encouraged', but nobody says anything about it if it works. When I worked there they claimed to have a quality control person listening randomly to calls, so the chances a collector would get caught were somewhere between slim and none.

Good luck trying to resolve your debt with Allianceone

Hope you don't need them to validate your debt. Apparently, they don't respond to DV requests. I guess Allianceone hasn't heard of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

Be "nice" on the phone??????

Alliance one is another bottom feeder. They are junk debt buyers..
their corporate address:
AllianceOne Receivables Management Inc.
1160 Centre Pointe Drive
Mendota Heights, MN 55120
Send them a demand validation letter (google it online). In the letter tell them they are NOT to contact you by phone. By law, they must cease. Send it CMRRR
And dont even think of being nice to them. Don't talk to them, don't take their calls.

or you could just pay your bills

Seriously, why didn't you just make the minimum payments in the first place. You know credit cards are there to make money and the consequences of not paying are expensive. My advice is next time try be nice to the rep on the phone and maybe he/she will try and help you. Why would we want to help if you're only combatant on the phone.
