Allstate Financial Services deposited the check in our bank account. what are we to do now to be protected Sydney Nova Scotia

my husband received a letter with a check made in his name for $4,800.00 he was told it was to help pay the taxes and the name of the tax agent to send $3,650.00 out of this check it also said to call before depositing to activate this check we did call and was told to go ahead and deposit and after deposited to call back we did what was told but haven't called back the check is to clear on june 1, 2009 @ 5 p.m. after depositing check we decided to check on these companies on check and letter the name of the company on check was carestream, inc located @ 150 verona street, rochester, n.y. we found on yellow pages n.y. this company known as carestream health, inc. at the same location the company allstate financial services from yellow pages canada was located @ 44 portland, dartmouth, ns. we made copies of the check, letter, information found on yellow pages today i decided to look up the usa mega international sweepstake on the internet and found that this maybe a scam i'm going to take all of my copies to the bank so that my banker can help me with this check deposited into our account i'm hoping that this will help us if there is anything that can be done to stop these people if it is not real or a scam please do it.
