My Boyfriend had signed a contract with Cellular One five years ago. We have never had our phones shut off or disrupted in any way during those five years. We have two phones under his name but I am an athorized user on the account and have been since we started the plan.

About a month ago Alltel took over our account because they bought out Cell One. We had been under Alltel for 1 month to the day when they disrupted our service (no calls in and no calls out) Same as disconecting to me. We had never received any notice that our service would end our that they needed any information from us. When I called to find out why this had happend I was told it was because our payment was late.

When I told them it had been mailed and asked them how late it was they told me that it was TWO DAYS late. I have never heard of a company disrupting service over a two day late payment and they said they also needed contact #'s for us when I told them they had the two # they had given us on our cell phones they said that wouldnt work. When I tryed to give them two other contact #'s (remember I am an athorized user on the account) they told me I could'nt and they would need that from my boyfriend. These are our only phones, no land line.

By this point, I had talked to 8 people at alltel who were all very rude and told me it was not their problem. So I told them since they turned off our service we would take our money else where if they didnt want to help me and they said go ahead. That very day I had my #'s ported to Verizon.

Today I received a bill for $519.44 from Alltel for early disconection fees. I don't see how they can do this for one we didnt back out of the contract, they did by shuting our phones off and two we never signed with them. We signed with Cellular One. How can they hold us to a contract we never signed through them and will this go againt our credit if we don't pay?

If you are with Alltel please be carful because they are very rude and don't care about customer service at all. Wanting to stick this bill up Alltels Whooha!

I worked for cellone before we became Alltel and honestly am surprised that your account was turned off after 2 days past due date. For a long term customer such as you described the suspension date was usually somewhere around 30 days.

As for authorized users the only thing you should NOT be able to do is change the password, cancel the account or change another authorized user. It should have been ok for you to change the contact information.

I asked the same question you did when we merged with Alltel, customers didn't sign with Alltel they signed with Cellone, how can we hold them to a contract? Apparently in purchasing the company they purchased the rights to your contract, and they can uphold that contract and it's all legal.

As for the position you are in now if you don't know you might try and find out when the end of your contract was up, your account was cancelled when the port request came in from Verizon and was processed. If you were under contract they would auto charge you the $200 per line. You might be able to work out a deal with the resolution department (cancellation dept) to see if you could buy out the rest of your contract if it was up soon.

The collections will stay in house for about 90-120 days before they will be sent to a collection agency. And the company would like nothing better than to settle it without having to send it out since their profits get cut down.

But if it makes you feel any better I quit soon after Alltel took over as they SAID they cared about the customer so much more than cellone did, but when it came around to compromises and working with the customer, trying to make better relations even if it meant a discount they clamped up. Any adjustments made over $30 have to get supervisor approval and they REFUSE to give any kind of courtesy credits towards customers that might have been wronged. They're very tightfisted!
