I was preparing to pay my American Express bill when I noticed a $69 charge that neither my husband or I could identify from AEPC Member Services. American Express said the charge resulted from an advertisement they sent that we had failed to decline.
Apparently if you neglect to send a response to this advertising with a certain box checked, you are enrolled in whatever they are promoting, our was a travel & leisure golf club.
Amex did promise to delete the charge (next month of course). I asked that our account be removed from whatever list generates this offer, but was told that I could not initiate that change; the "primary card holder", i.e. my husband would have to do it.
If Amex need more fees, it should just charge them honestly and not resort to this underhanded, sleazy method of generating revenue. What a ripoff!!

This happened to me as well with a different twist. A charge for $2.99 was placed on my account on 3-08-2011. It took me 3 phone calls to customer service and one hour of wait time on the phone but they claimed it would be removed. The scam is, AEPC is owned by Amex but is a different Co. so the first response from customer service is, "oh, we can't help you, you have to call them direct". Of course I was unable to get through on the number provided and called CS two more times. The real difference in my case is they never even questioned the default contract issue. Just tried to sneak one in hoping no one would notice. Blatant in your face fraud.
