I took a trip from Los Angeles to Temple Texas on AMTRAK for my sisters wedding. We decided to try their first class cabins. The way there was acceptable, aside from being tossed around at night like a rag doll and then having them park in the middle of the desert for a whole night in record high heat with no electricity or air conditioning, we couldnt even open the windows!!!!
The staff was incredibly rude and was talking back to us the whole time.

On the way back, the train was 9 hours late and the attendant told me that i had too much baggage (I actually had less than the way there!) and that I would have to either leave some of it there in Texas or carry it up to my cabin myself.they offered no assistance whatsoever!

Later on that evening they called us into the horrible "eating area" I felt like they treated us like a bunch of cattle. That night the crew was yelling at each other and cussing and throwing punches, we had to lock our cabin door thinking we would be killed!
well, the trip took longer than expected, we stopped int he middle of the desert again in the morning and remained there for over 20 hours with no air conditioning or electricity again! and we were not allowed to get off the train for fresh air! turns out they were trying to fix a derailment up ahead, turns out there were to be 4 derailments on our way home and WE WERE ON THE SAME TRACKS!!!!!

well, 1 and a half days before we actually arrived in los Angeles we ran out of food and the only thing there was to eat was sugar snacks fruit juice and soda! unfortunately, IM DIABETIC!!! I had no choice but to eat that and drink it to keep from starving to death!
by the time we got home, i needed to be rushed to the emergency room because i was going into a diabetic coma! I was in intensive care for 8 days! I have contacted Amtrak and they deny any responsibility, they feel that I made the choice to consume the sugar and had the choice not to!to "ease my comfort" they sent me 2 vouvhers for 200.00 each towards my next trip, YEAH RIGHT!!! you couldnt pay me enough to EVER ride the train again!

Moral of the story:
If you have any health issues, time restraints, half a brain..............KEEP AWAY!!!!
your life is not worth the hassle!

Aglomated Transit Union Protects Amtrak Employees

The A.T.U (aglomated Transit Union) protects Amtrak employees from being fired for mistreatment of customers. They know that they can not be fired and their fat lazy asses are protected by the union so they feel as if they can mistreat everyone. Most of them are of a low education level and can not comprehend the words customer service.

A large majority of them are minorities and Amtrak is afraid of discrimination lawsuits if one of them is fired. The ironic thing is the A.T.U also represents Greyhound's employees too, another classic example of customer service (detect the sarcasm?). The board of Amtrak consists of ex-Senators and Politicians (i.e. Tommy Thompson) they do not want anyone to mess with the goose that laid the golden egg, so they do nothing. Amtrak is an example of how unions protect and reward the rude and lazy, and that polticians are crooks. SAVE AMERICA KILL AMTRAK, the multi billion dollar budget to support this money pit can be more useful elsewhere, remember when you fill your car with gas .02 per gallon of the federal gas tax goes to amtrak.

I travel Amtrak every year from NC to NY and I agree that the service SUCKS!!! More than once we were stuck for more than 20 hours at a time! Just about every time I take the train I get stuck on it for hours on end! Half the outlets on the train don't work, the TV's never work, i think they were just put in for show, and the prices of food on teh train are insane! And it's true you are only allowed 2 pieces of checked baggage and one carry on bag. So, Lucky You Ralph for not having to experience the hell that is Amtrak!

No Problems with Amtrak

I ride Amtrak frequently and have never had such problems. If there was a risk of health problem you should have gotten off at next stop and dealt with Amtrak later. I, too, have a chronic (fatal, at times) illness and have been treated with incredible respect. I hope your experience was an anomoly and would say try them again. There is no better way to go than Amtrak! Good luck to you.
