I signed up originally on June 5th, 2008 for a Bally club membership in which I paid $35 in fees on that day -all that I'd owed after discounts were applied, leaving my account balance at $0. I ended up having to leave the country for a family emergency about a month and a half later in July, and called my local Bally's to cancel my membership. The employee I spoke with at my local Bally club asked for my information along with account number, and confirmed that he'd found my account and my account was effectively cancelled.

However, I was looking at a credit report earlier today for myself (10/22), and noticed a $1,050 line item listed for Bally's. I called the corporate number that my credit report provided, and came to find out from their corporate office that my account was STILL active, and that no cancellation had ever been submitted! I explained that I never once called the corporate office -my cancellation had been done by calling my local Bally's, not a corporate number.

They are now refusing to confirm my cancellation unless I pay the account in full.

When there are recurring charges or a subscription of any kind of service, always get a written confirmation with the company contact's name and pertinent contact information. Without the written confirmation, you have a "he said, she said" situation.
