Bally Total Fitness must have the worst customer service I have ever experienced. Sure I had heard stories of people having problems cancelling their memberships but since I signed a 1-year membership and paid it in full upon signing, I couldn't foresee any problems.

A 1-year membership is to me a membership that expires after 1 year - done deal. At no point during the signing of the contract, did the sales rep ever inform me that I had to actively cancel my membership myself after the 1-year was up. She did however tell me that I could only cancel if I moved somewhere there is no Ballys gym. Somewhere in the fine print of the contract Bally's had hidden a clause which said that the membership would continue after the 1-year and that they would debit my account. Granted, this was obviously a mistake of mine, not to study over this contract more carefully but it was not a house I was purchasing only a gym membership. Surely the contractual details of this cannot be that complicated that the hungry-for-commission sales rep would not be able to tell me this one important piece of information?

As it turned out, I didn't much care for the gym, it was over-crowded, had inadequate parking, and was not what I had hoped for. I accepted the fact that I had paid for a gym I wasn't using, knowing that it would only be for a year. When the year was up I noticed on my bank statement that Ballys had charged my account twice without my consent. I angrily phoned them, to inform them that I had only signed up for a year. The girl on the phone said she couldn't refund my money and she couldn't cancel my membership either as this would have to be in writing to their PO box somewhere in California. What does she mean she can't cancel over the phone? They can do everything else over the phone except that. This a bunch of BS and I'm sure just another way for Ballys to stuff themselves with their customer's hard earned money while my letter is left on someone's desk waiting to be filed.

There are few words that come to mind when I think of Bally Total Fitness and most of them too explicit to mention here but I will say this: Ballys sucks!
