Not only does Bank of America provide poor customer service but I recently learned that they have a system in place to ensure the highest penalties possible when a customer goes into overdraft.
I feel the biggest problem is the bank holds visa transactions and pends them to clear. They blame this on Visa and the retailer however I feel the bank us ultimately responsible for requiring a hold to be placed.
The problem lies with the way they withdrawl funds from their customers account. A customer may have 5 pending transactions for only a small amount per transaction. If they have a larger transaction that places their account in the negative the bank will withdraw the larger transaction first and then the next highest amount and so forth until all transaction have been taken out, even if the larger transaction was several days after the smaller transactions.
So the argument that is made is the bank is protecting the interest of the consumer because they took out the highest and most important amount first. That is a lie. They take the highest amount first in order to inflict as much monetary damage as possible.
I recommend that either a class action suit is placed together to stop this practice or that consumers encourage congress to pass a bill requesting funds be withdrawn in order that they were taken out by the consumer. It of course would then be the consumers responsibilty to take care of any returned check. Also debit transactions would not be a problem because if the funds could not be immediatly verified they would not be taken out.
If this has happened to you I recommend voicing your concern with the Bank. Keep records of the call and of any bank emails you may have. File a complaint with the Ripoff Report, the Federal Trade Commission, your Local Better Business Bureau, and most importantly your State Banking Department.
Pressure needs to be put on Bank of America and other banks to help stop consumer abuse.

Charles [Anonymous-Alabama],
The reason Bank of America has the most complaints, is that they are the largest bank in the United States.
Second, you have mis-spelled many words here, contrary to your statement.
Should be "experience" and "customer", and banks, not bank's,
Now for everyone,
The posting order of transactions is totally irrelevant if you properly manage your account via a checkbook register, and do not "float" checks or other transactions.
It is a CHOICE to pay overdraft fees. I CHOOSE not to. And I do not pay them. Ever.

The problem is not that overdraft fees are charged. The writer, as many others who has had a problem with this particular 'Bank', is saying that this Bank is shuffling around items that are already posted.
The example below are how this Bank operates. At the end of the day:
8/4 -$48.00 (pending) Balance $652.00
8/6 -$120.00 (pending) Balance $532.00
8/7 $100.00 deposited cash Balance $632.00
8/8 -$550.00 (pending) Balance $82.00
On the next day when you go into your account this is the order you see:
8/9 -$550.00 Balance $102.00
8/9 -$120.00 Balance -$82.00
8/9 -$48.00 Balance -$130.00
8/9 $100.00 Deposit Balance -$30.00
8/10 -$35.00 Overdraft Balance -$65.00
8/10 -$35.00 Overdraft Balance -$100.00
8/10 -$35.00 Overdraft Balance -$135.00
So this bank i s making $135.00 on you. Is this really right??? The account should be posted the way it came in and NOT held and shuffled around. Apply it as it comes, then if there is a problem it is on you. But right now there are a lot of people whom this is happening to and they are afraid to talk about it because of comments like the ones posted. Sometimes you must wear someoneelses shoes for a minute before making comments. Banks have always posted highest to smallest, YES, but now there is a blatent thievery with the way they are SHUFFLING the posting around. IT IS WRONG!!! and something should be done about it.

In your report you said:

I can almost guarantee if the banks did this.....people like you would never see a day clear and free of an overdraft / NSF fee. If you were keeping your account balanced and not over spending it wouldnt matter how things were posted or put on hold. I seriously doubt these banks have a poorly lit windowless back room full of people just itching to rearrange your debits, checks and deposits in an effort to cause you all these nasty fees.
Take responsibility for what you're responsible for and this wont keep happening.
