I thought I was going crazy until I came upon your web site. Bank of America has recently taken over Fleet Bank in Boston. . I receive SSDI on the 3rd of every month. Last month, July'05, I noticed on the 5th when I checked my balance as I do daily, that I had already incurred overdraft charges, that unauthorized deductions had been made by an internet music site and that the overdrafts were being resubmitted 3 or more times with a charge of 34.00 each time. I attempted to get information from the bank but was told if they were still Fleet, they could reimburse some of the charges but that Bank of America would not.

Altogether in the month of July, I was charged 300.00 in overdraft fees. I was never notified that the cost of an O.D. had gone from 22.00 to 34.00 and on the 3rd of this month a third of my income went to Bank of America. In addition, I incurred charges from companys whose checks had been declined because of the overdraft fees. I had always used the auto teller line to check my balance and the balance was always correct even if all charges had not been posted. When I spoke to Bank of America to get my balance, through a customer rep., I was told the balance was correct and was the amount available. When I double checked and asked if the balance included any pending charges, I was told no, there were pending charges, not yet deducted from the balance. So, I asked then the balance you gave me was incorrect? Not really was the reply....I want to remove my money from the bank but am afraid that bills I have paid and that have not yet gone through will somehow be declined. I am afraid of my own bank account and discovered today, after telling the bank that no internet music sites were authorized to deduct from my account, that three music sites had been paid 30.00.

Those sites have been called and I have reveived emails stating that they have cancelled the service I never ordered but did not mention as they had on the phone that I would be reembursed.I was forced to borrow money from a relative to pay my bills and am only paying one bill at a time, making sure the others have cleared before risking this kind of loss again. I'd rather be hostage to a terrorist.

Just balance your check book!!!!!

AUTHOR: Monae - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Saturday, August 13, 2005

Let me get this straight the beginning of of Friday you have $300, cool right? You know you have a check that you deposited and hope that it would clear by Friday, but you don't check at any point in time during your day. You go to store #1-123, store #2-210, store #3-32, and store#4-3.99. What your saying is that even though you didn't check your account before you started spending momey that it is the bank's fault that they charged you fees to cover your purshases. Explain that to me, I don't know about you people but I would not want to go to the store and my check card come back declined. It is YOUR responsiblity to monitor your finances. EVERY morning before I leave the house I check my BOA account. EVERY evening I check my reciepts against my balance, as well as add them to my checkbook. Have I ever had a overdraft charge NOPE!!!! Own up to your shortcomings. Its people like you that drove the overdraft and NSF fees up in the first place. You seem to all try to get over and the turn around and get upset because you were caught and penalized. Listen the bank gave you a loan the fixed rate of said loan is 34 dollars period. In all honesty that is pretty good loan for .01-unlimited dollar amout=34 loan.

In BoA's defense

AUTHOR: Ken - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, August 09, 2005

Let me start out by saying that if you not keep an accurate running balance of your own account, it is NEVER the banks fault. No matter what bank it is, you have the primary responsibility for keeping track of your own money.

When you ask a teller your balance, they have no way of knowing that you might have outstanding checks, or electronic purchases... only you know that. They can only tell you what the balance is at the exact moment. That is the sum and total of their responsibility.

That being said, if you had unauthorized debits to your account, all you have to do is go into the branch and tell them that, and file an affadavit of fraud. Since they cannot prove that you made the purchases (you really didnt, right?) they have to refund your money, and rebate any overdraft charges caused by the fraudulent activity.

When BoA took over Fleet, I got a great BIG package that detailed everything about my accounts, including the fee structure.

I'm no big fan of BoA (I use Quincy Credit Union) but I think you're being unjustly hard on them.

No info received re: policy changes Bank of America

AUTHOR: Jane - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 07, 2005

I keep all statements from BOA and have gone through them all, no info.....also, I asked while speaking to the bank rep if the bank was not required to notify customers of changes in policy from the policies of Fleet, The answer was no. I am aware that people of low income are prime targets for this bank, they count on the fees they charge us and make huge profits by them. PBS did documentary on this subject, please go to their web site and check for that program in the archives.

I have not changed banks yet because I need to make sure all transactions are cleared first and need time to notify Social Security of bank change. When I do change banks it will not be to a large chain ie: Citizens, it will be to a smaller Savings Bank, with Savings account only. It's also difficult to go by my own register if I do not know about unauthorized deductions from my account.

I'm a reasonably intelligent person and an honest one but maybe I'd be better served by being skeptical about the honesty of institutions like BOA.Time to keep the money in the mattress folks.

news reports in Connecticut, the Fleet accounts were transfered over to BofA last month

AUTHOR: Robert - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, August 07, 2005

If I remember correctly from news reports in Connecticut, the Fleet accounts were transfered over to BofA last month. You should have received a notice of this as well as a copy of the new terms and conditions for your new BofA account.

Let me guess. You threw them out.

Since BofA is a nation wide bank as opposed to Fleet which was regional, there are probably quite a few polcy changes you will need to be aware of.

I would suggest going up to BofA web site and finding their terms and conditions and print out a copy to review. This way there will be no surprises or thoughts of "going crazy".

You may also want to consider closing your account with BofA and opening a new one with another regional bank (Citizens or some similar bank).

Never, NEVER use the online balance (ATM or by phone)to determine your account balance. Keep your own separate account register. It is far more accurate.

Also use care when using the word "terrorists".

Good luck.
