On Tuesday October 14th, I made my last transaction for the week for Brighthouse Networks for 100.51. When I checked my account online it showed that I had $7.57 available in my account. When I checked my account on Wednesday October 15, my account had a negative balance of $-12.84. All of my transactions were cleared but the one from Brighthouse. I called Bank of America and they explained that I had a transaction from October 9th for 20.18 that had just cleared, and that's why my account was negative, and that I would be charged one overdraft fee of $35 for the pending Brighthouse transaction. I understood that because it was the only transaction that hadn't cleared and that I didn't have enough funds for. When I checked my account Thursday October 16th, I had been charged three overdraft fees with the Brighthouse transaction still pending. I was told I was being charged for three other transactions that were each under $10, that had already been cleared and paid for, because Bank of America clears the higher transactions first, but the highest transaction, which was for Brighthouse, was never even cleared. That transaction is still pending while the other ones have been paid. My online account shows Bank of America deducting overdraft fees while my account still has a positive balance! I had the funds in my account for the 3 smaller transactions to be paid, and all were paid for, but I'm still being charged four overdraft fees by Bank of America. In all I'm being charge $140.00. I feel like this is a huge scam. What is beyond me is that they haven't even paid my largest transaction or cleared it, and I'm being charged for three transactions that were already cleared. When I talked to a supervisor over the phone he told me that I couldn't rely on online banking to be completely accurate and that I should use a transaction register instead. I asked him what was the point of even having online or over the phone banking if I can't even rely on it to be accurate. The supervisor refused to give me a courtesy of deducting some of the overdraft fees, and when I told him I couldn't pay it all he told me that if I didn't pay within 20 days I could set up a payment plan- which I can't do because I have direct deposit and the fees will already be deducted from my deposited check automatically.

Not only was the bank correct...

You are setting yourself up for this to happen again and again. Why? Because you use online banking to learn your account balance.

Online banking can be a useful tool, I use it to determine when transactions clear or when deposits post. Earlier this year I spotted a double charge on my account through online banking. Having said that, it's not good to depend on it for your account balance.

As I noted in another report, I spent $38 at the gas station this weekend. I paid at the pump. My online banking page says that the station has only put a $1 hold on my debit card. If I were to figure out my account balance through online banking, I would have a false impression that there is an additional $37 in my account.

If I have a check out there that hasn't been presented yet, the bank won't know about it. If I have an automatic payment coming up, that won't show up either until it's charged.

Checking accounts take a bit of work to maintain. Your options are to do the work and not get hit with fees, don't do the work and get charged fees for every transaction that results in a negative balance or just stop using checking accounts. Your call.

The fact you have money in the account means nothing. The only thing that matters was what is available and the money for the Brighthouse transaction was not available based on the information in your report. You're depending on an online system that will mislead you into thinking you have money available, when you don't. The reason banks provide the service is to make certain (1) that you track debits, such as automatic deductions for memberships or some such thing, coming from your account, or (2) to make certain there is no fraud being perpetrated against your account by someone trying to steal your identity.

If you had kept an accurate check register, you would have known there were insufficient funds in your account. I highly recommend using a check register and to immediately stop using a debit card for your transactions. You will keep more of your money. Best of luck, but this is not unreasonable based on the agreement you made with the bank at the time the account was established.
