Here is a the letter I wrote to Blockbuster detailing my bad experience:
I am cancelling because of a bad experience in-store, and constant policy changes online. I have had an account with the Blockbuster store in Eastlake, Oh. since 2002.
I've always paid my late/restocking fees promptly and have been a loyal customer. Over the past year I haven't been that great about returning my movies on-time because I have a one-year-old daughter, and it's hard to get out of the house. That's what I liked about blockbuster, I've kept movies a long time before, but I could always return them and pay whatever restocking fees I owed.
Today (11/18/2008) I tried to return 2 movies I had for awhile to rent new ones. For the first time ever I was met by complete rudeness by the staff and informed I could not return the movies, that I "owned them." As the rudeness continued I asked to speak with Matt, the store manager who knows my family and I.
The rude employees informed me that he was in an interview and that they were not going to get him. My wife became extremely upset and we wanted to leave. So I asked for the movies I now "owned," and they wouldn't give them back.
So now I have a 50 fee on my account and nothing to show for it, is that fair business practices? I don't think so. When I returned home I called the store and spoke with the store manager. While he had always been pleasant in the past, he was unwilling to budge on the so-called new policy that had been in affect for 6 months.
Why was I not called when my movies were late or informed of this policy? He told me the new policy was on the bottom of the receipt. Can you honestly tell me who reads the bottom of a receipt? He also said there were signs posted on the door. Do you have any idea how many signs there are on the blockbuster windows? A lot. How am I expected to pick out a small sign denoting a policy change amongst all of that?
Bottom line, the effort to inform customers was half-baked, and if the policy had been in effect for 6 months then why in the recent past have I been able to return movies that were out over 20 days?
Your online store constantly changes policies, charging more for less. So now I'm paying 21 a month for a lot less than I got a year ago. The blockbuster in Eastlake wants me to pay 50 for movies I don't even have anymore. So is 50 really worth it to your giant corporation?
Let's do the math. If I'm paying $21 a month for online and about $15 in-store plus $5 in late fees that's $41 dollars a month. That adds up to $492 a year. Over the next 5 years you could have made $2460 from me.
Now, I know that may not sound like a lot to a big corporation like yourself, but it sure beats the measly $50 you want me to pay. I'm switching to Netflix and Hollywood Video, and I'll never set foot in a Blockbuster or pay for Online again.
When Asked How They Can Improve I Wrote:
You can improve by including provisions in new policies that give store managers discretion in allowing long-time customers to circumvent those polices, at least once. There by not only keeping your customer happy, but also keeping more revenue flowing into your company. My small account my not seem like much, but I'm not the only one upset with blockbusters shady practices. Keep it up, and eventually my one account will turn into many. In an economy like that you need all the customers you can get, and you just lost a loyal one. Let's see what the better business bureau thinks about all of this.

ok 1st of alll i must say i hate working at blockbuster. but you have a 7 day rental period, than a 7 day grace period... and then 30 days to return the movie... if you cant return the movie by then its obviously yours... if you dont like it return your movies on time... your rental period is only 7 days... and yes we contact you, well not us but a computer does every couple days when ur movie is first late and after it shows us on the computer when the exact date the computer called you! so try being responsible and stop blaming others for your mistake ...

Well, this does need some clarification.

First, if you have a balance on the account and the movies WERE past due, there are a few things to consider.
1. You didn't have updated in store information so the balance is on your account.
2. If you "own" movies, and there is a balance and you hand them to us, we are not able to give them back as you still owe the money for them. When the balance is paid, you are given the movies or ones at the same price that you paid.
As for the policy...the "no late fees," that has been in effect since August 2004, maybe sooner. 7 extra days, sold and 30 days to return it. This store may have the 5 days grace and 10 days to return it. And if they do, I'm sure they must have informed you or at least tried to inform you...how? Signs. You say, "how am I supposed to pick out a sign..." well, why not read them? Or listen to the person ringing you out. Read your receipt. I am going to guess the person in corporate reading this letter is probably thinking, "this person didnt read any literature given to him, so why does he deserve anything from us..."
Seriously. If you cannot read what is around you at least once, then how do you expect to know what you're getting yourself into. Do you sign all contracts without reading them? What if the sign said, "FREE MOVIE RENTAL with your soul as payment..." would you even bother to read the fine print?
What's that saying? "Don't forget to read the fine print." Perhaps, you should have done that. And until you actually do take the time to look around you and get a clue, you're not a customer I would want in my store. Probably the type of person to talk on their phone and not pay attention to ANYTHING I'm telling you. Granted, most of the employees dont like bbv and theyll try to help you save money. If you don't want to listen, then oh well.
Oh, and as for the 50$ hubub...lets put out a few more numbers since you like to do so as well.
For the sake of example, we'll say you rented two 2 day rental movies that are worth 23$ roughly equally the 50$ you're speaking of. And this week it was Tropic Thunder and Wall-E.
So you rent Wall-e and Tropic Thunder. They're 5$ each. You pay 10$ to rent them. You have 2 days to return them and a 7 day grace period. After that, it's sold to you and you have 30 days to bring them back. At the end of that, you have 50$ owed to blockbuster for not returning something.
Now, if there were LATE FEES, it would go like this...
You rent the two movies stated above for 10$ and have 2 days. After the 2 day rental period is up, you'll be charged every two days, another 5$ for each movie. Guessing by how long you have the movies, it was at least 37 days. We'll go to 38 just to be on the safe side...and that's 40 days total.
40 days, minus the 2 day rental period is 38 days
38 days/2 days for rental periods gets you 19 rental periods
19 periods x 10$ for two movies
That's a whopping 190$ that you would owe blockbuster.
But lucky you, you only owe 50$! Wow! You still saved 140$! Lucky you. But alas, you don't want to pay that...well, sucks for you. Good luck then.
