I had gotten an email ad from bluebird about depositing my tax return to the card. Seemed like a good idea, so I filed a joint tax return for 2013 with my husband and had tried to have it deposited on my bluebird card. I woke up today and had an email from Amex stating they "could not accept my federal tax return direct deposit". I called them, got the run around and had to wait on hold forever to speak to a supervisor. Apparently if the main social security number on the return doesn't match the bluebird account they will REJECT it. WTF? Some of us are married. At least disclose in your advertisements that if you're filing a joint return Bluebird will not accept the deposit! Nevermind that I've never once had this issue with my walmart money card. So now, thanks to American Express and their completely inefficient (and quite dumb at least for the two I spoke with) customer service department it will be AT LEAST a week before I get a paper check that I will have to PAY to have cashed. Bluebird does not care, the supervisor I spoke with (Michelle) just kept repeating "I'm sorry ma'am," in the most monotonous and bored voice she could manage. No, Bluebird, you are NOT sorry. It's not your money, you could care less. I had my card deactivated and I will NEVER under ANY circumstances use one of these joke cards ever again.

Since bluebird is a "checking account alternative" think it's safe to assume most people using them don't use conventional banking. Why pay the bank $20+ a month for a checking account when a prepaid card does it for free or significantly cheaper? That's not very logical, especially taking into consideration that the majority of people no longer need paper checks (including me).
Bluebird just happened to be a complete pain in the behind and even if I had a checking account, I'm hearing that when a deposit is returned to the IRS it can take up to a month to get a paper check issued and mailed. The point is I shouldn't be going through this.

“it will be AT LEAST a week before I get a paper check that I will have to PAY to have cashed”
Why not just deposit it into your checking account?
