I went to Brakes Plus today because my front wheels needed new brake pads. I had been told this by the dealership, yet I thought I would get a better deal somewhere else. They offered a free inspection and I agreed. They said me it would be an hour. The inspection came back that I needed new pads, rotors, brake flush, transmission flush, and engine filter. I knew the fluids they said were required were bogus as I had just had the car into the dealership for this service. The quote was $514.00. I told the mechanic, "I'm sorry, I can't afford it right now." I went inside and waited for them to take my car off the lift. Twenty minutes later, the car was still on the lift. I went outside and asked the mechanic what was happening and how long it was going to take. He said about an hour. I asked him why, and he said they had already started servicing it. I was shocked. I told him I couldn't afford it and I hadn't approved it. He asked me what I wanted him to do. I told him "put my tires on and let me have my car." He yelled at the mechanic to stop work on it, and that mechanic acted pissed. I went insided and waited again and they did nothing. I started complaining to the people inside telling them how upset I was and only then, maybe 20 minutes later did they decide to give me my car back.
I am a single woman and I believe they were trying to take advantage of me. I immediately took my car to a mechanic I had used before and they replaced my pads and brakes for $270.00. They told me I didn't need any fluids or flushes.
Brakes Plus could certainly come back and say they misunderstood me, but I clearly told the mechanic that I could not afford their "free estimate."
Don't go to Brakes Plus. They are shady.

#1 UPDATE Employee
Misunderstanding

Hello,
I am one of the sales person(s) you speak of in your complaint. There are a few things I think that got misconstrued between the time myself and you walked around your van to when we walked through the doors to enter the show room.
With you being a female I felt the need to show you around your Dodge Caravan so you could see exactly what was needed, at this time I had a written estimate that I went over with you as we walked around your vehicle. When this walk around was completed I gave you a price at the back counter, you're exact words were "I really dont have the money but It's gotta be done!".
I looked directly at you and said "Ok ma'am, give us a few hours and we will have you wrapped up and out of here in no time!". I then went directly to the phone and ordered the parts we did not have in stock, that is when you approached another employee asking "How long it will take?", that is when I walked into the showroom and told you "about an hour or so like we discussed" and this is when the miscommunication was discovered. Obviously a simple mistake was made and corrected immediately as you're vehicle was promptly put back together.
I can speak for the company and myself and tell you the last thing that was ever intended was for you to feel like you or the vehicle was held hostage.
If you would allow us we would like to try and get started on the right foot this time.
Thank you
Brakes Plus Employee.
