In January of 2004, I contacted one of Capital One's customer service representatives and requested my account be closed. I sent a check for the balance on my account as reported to me by said CS Rep. A check for over $500 dated Jan 22, 2004.
In July I received a COLLECTIONS call from Capital One. They stated there was STILL an outstanding balance on the account, and therefore they could not close the acount until it was paid. At that time I autherised a 'tele-check' for $80, that was AGAIN suposed to zero my balance and CLOSE the account.
TODAY Jan 2, 2005 I recieved another call from their Collections department!!!!!! The account has not been closed AND they are telling me there a late fees being applied to the account, as well as reports being made the Credit Companys because I haven't made a payment!
I have contacted Pre-paid Legal, and one their attornys has advised me not to make any further payments until I receive a written stament of my account covering this period in question.

Been there.. done all the things you've done. Closed account, overpaid, received refund after 30 days of overpayment then got turned into credit bureau for being past due. The past due amount turned out to be a charge from a company that notifies me of any credit report problems plus late fees. Once a year they charge me $59. I assumed when you close an account it's closed. SO.. I went to war with these people. I cancelled a second card I had with them, wrote a nice letter to them and also disputed with Experian Credit. You have to push past the person who takes the call and go to the next level. Call every day! Document each call with times and name of person talked to. You will win.
