On approx. July 6, 2010 I called several providers to see if services were available at my new address in TN. After checking around I found out that the only internet/cable services available at my address was through Charter Communications. I have had Charter before at my old address in Alabama and had numerous problems such as internet going down on a weekly basis and questionable picture quality and rising costs.

I thought about it for a bit and decided I would give them another try, not to mention I didn't have another alternative if I wanted Internet. I called Charter, they confirmed that I could get service at my new address, so I placed my order and set up an installation time. The installation was set up for 6/12/2010 and the sub-contractor showed up in the time frame I was told. The problem was, he said that he did not think that I could get cable service but would call and have them send a surveyor out to check. My house is in a group of about 5 houses but is the only one on top of the hill, the other 4 have Charter services. I called Charter to confirm that a surveyor was coming out and they told me that he would be there on Wed. 6/14/2010, so I made another trip to Alabama to finish the move. Late in the day on Tues. 6/13/2010 my wife received a voicemail that the surveyor had been out and that we could not get service but did not give any details.

I called Charter to ask them about it and they told me that they could not run cable to my house because it was "about" 500 feet to my house from the box. After talking more and getting more details they told me that the surveyors notes stated that it could be done but they would have to "build a line" and there would be an additional charge. Upon asking about the additional charge and how much it would be, the response was that they didn't know and that I would have to contact the local office for that information. She then told me the address for "my local Charter office" which was in Clarksville, Tn, about 40 miles away. I explained that it was 40 miles away and then asked for the phone number and she told me there wasn't one, I asked about email, she said there wasn't one. I then asked if she could send a message to that office to contact me and I was told that she couldn't do that and that my only option was to go into the office.

I arrived back in town on Wed. 6/14/2010 but had to go back out of town on Thurs. 6/15/2010. I decided I would get up early and drive 80 miles roundtrip out of my way to find out the cost to "build a line".

Upon arriving to the Charter office, the lady at the desk was very friendly and helpful, at first. I told her all that I had been through so far and she told me she didn't have any record of the surveyor going to my address. She then said she would contact the supervisor about the situation and have him personally go to the address and survey it for service.

I received a call on Fri. 6/16/2010 from the construction supervisor. He told me that he wasn't sure why the surveyor told me that it couldn't be done. He then told me that it could be done but they would have to build a line and that there would be an extra charge of $700 up front for them to build it because it was a distance of 490 ft.

During this runaround with Charter I had also called Comcast to double check because of seeing a Comcast van in the area. I ended up speaking with a supervisor/tech who told me that they would build the line at no additional charge but they're service ends 1/2 mile up the road.

I just DO NOT see how Charter can charge this enormous amount to "build a line" up front no less, knowing they are going to make that back throughout the year for their overpriced services.

Can someone please help me and let me know if they are legally able to charge such a fee and if there is anything I can do to reduce the fee or if there is anything that I can do at all.

Thanks for any info. and I apologize for the lengthy report.

That lying sack of dogshit Charter employee who posted the rebuttal that Charter cares about thier customers is full of s**t! Charter is the worst cable provider on EARTH. If there was cable service on Mars, they'd suck there too! The only way to get satisfaction with Charter is to CANCEL. They will lie to you repeatedly, They know what the problem is and they won't fix it. They are the worst company in the world.
