I received a call today from Chrysler about a payment which I mailed two weeks ago yet they have not received. While speaking with the representative, who was very rude and not good w/customers, she informed me that I owe $178 in late fees that have been accumulating since 2004. I don't rebut that I have made my payment late since taking on the loan, but I rebut that I have never paid a late fee at all. I have proof from my bank of the late fees I have paid and they will not send me any proof of what I owe.

Not sure what American would just offer to give them $178 w/no proof of what they owe but I know I sure won't. If I am required to pay this, shouldn't they be required to offer me the info of proof???

#1 UPDATE EX-employee responds

Reps don't want to take the time

AUTHOR: Ex-cf Employee - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, January 27, 2009

The rep's at Chrysler Financial are graded on stat's and are pushed to get as many people on the phone as they can and don't want to spend much time looking at a particular account. (BTW, customer service quality is not one of the stat's).

Since you have had the vehicle for 4 years, I assume that this is most likely not a lease and you are financing the vehicle. If you have fallen on some hard times and you account has gone over 30 days past due, even if you pay late charges, it will not look like it unless the rep looks at your account in detail. Here is what this looks like. Assume your payment is $400 with a late charge of $15. If you pay $415 when the account is over 30 days past due, that extra $15 is being applied to you other payment that is due, and it still shows your late charges as unpaid. I know that it is very irritating to still show the late charge after is has technically been paid, but the total amount comes out equal in the end.

If you actually are leasing the vehicle, it is even more screwed up in the way late charges are applied. Once you fall behind on your payments (only 1 day past due here), you basically have to pay the account a month ahead plus the late charges before it actually shows that they have been paid. They will be applied to the next payment instead of late charges. Using the same figures from above, if you had 3 late payments and paid the late charge each time, your next payment would look like { Payment Due: $355 Late Charges: $45}.
So here as well, the late charges still show, but the total amount is still the same.

With both of these examples, I am making assumptions of your situation. While it may not be your specific case, these were very common things that I saw while I worked there (the grass IS greener on the other side!!!).

Here is what you need to do to verify where your money is going on the account. Chrysler Financial can mail you a copy of your payment history. This will show you what amount was received each month and how it was applied to your account. When you call them, I am guessing that you are probably talking to someone from India at first, this is a company that they contracted to handle many of their incoming calls (believe me, I know your frustration. Many of them are untrained on what to do in just about every situation). I have had them transfer many calles to me because the customer said they wanted to speak with someone in America, so you might give that a shot. However, you might have to try this several times before you get through (see opening remark about stat's).

Good luck and I hope this may have helped you.
