I have a Dell laptop that is a couple months out of warranty. It got infected by a virus and I had to reinstall the operating system which I did. Now I cannot activate Windows because the activitation key Dell supplied with the computer is invalid (As per Microsoft). Now a third party contractor in India WHO ANSWERS THE OFFICIAL DELL OUT-OF -WARRANTY LINE wants to charge me $149 to fix a defective product. Don't buy Dell. They do not support defective products past one year.

The fact remains that i could not reset or refresh my computer because of a OEM problem that nobody at Dell wants to admit or may not even reallze. . But I solved the problem with the help of a website called " Save yourself from OEM's bas decisions". In a nutshell, if you bought an early version Dell Win 8 computer and updated to 8.1 as soon as it became available you cannot refresh or reset with the factory provided reinstallation software because of a conflict in the BIOS reading the product key code on the motherboard. Even if you extract the code using special software and put it in manually it does not work. But if you follow the instructions on the cited website it works like a miracle. In essence you do not reinstall from the factoiry diskette but from a special Microsoft website that allows you to download a new 8.1 OS that automatically reads the key code and you are good to go. The Dell out of warranty support group in India probably knows that and just wants your $149.

You are experiencing a software related issue and should take it to a qualified service location because you are unable to identify the difference between software and hardware related issues.
This is equivalent to blaming the engine when the actual problem is the inebriated driver behind the wheel.

It looks as though you're trying to install retail Windows and activate it using an OEM license key. That will not work. You have to install a Dell OEM version of Windows. I run a Dell shop and am reloadeing computers all of the time. The only time I've even had to activate Windows is if I'm NOT using the OEM version.
By the way, a virus didn't traverse the internet seeking you out. You invited it in.

I reinstalled the softward as instructed using the diskette provided by Dell. Then I could not activate windows because the installationn key on the motherboiard, which I extracted with the help of Microsoft, does not match the installation key on operating system reinstall software. Microsoft says tthis is a mfg. defect. You have sold me an iinherently defectice product that does not perform as advertised, i.e., the ability to renew or restore itself with the proivided software. Because it is inherently defective the one year warranty is invalid under maryland law and antomarically qualifies for implied warranties.

“They do not support defective products past one year.”
That is a false statement. You should change it to: Dell does not provide free support on out-of-warranty products.
From the Dell website: For fee-based support with virus removal, software, optimization, networking, and other non-hardware warranty support issues, call 1-866-795-5597 (24/7).
Your computer is not defective. Software problems are not covered under warranty so the age of the computer is not relevant.
Did you attempt to reinstall the operating system from the restore software that was included with the computer or did you obtain it elsewhere?
