Devry promised: a bachelor's degree that allowed a flexible schedule and provided the education needed to enter the IT field.
What I got: no degree, 70,000 dollars of debt, delays in registration, and lies

I had signed up to take online classes at Devry in 2004. I talked to admissions officer who wasn't straight forward about registering for online classes, which is what was originally intended. Instead, she told me to register as a campus student and said that I could transfer to online later. There was no reason given as to why she could not register me for online classes, but given that I was new to Devry, I trusted her.

After my first term, I tried to transfer campuses as instructed by the admissions lady when I first signed up to take classes. I was told that the policy had "changed" after I enrolled and devry said that I could no longer transfer internally between being campuses. Because I was taking online classes exclusively, I have never taken a class at the Naperville campus to this very date, even though I was considered a student there.

Additionally, I have had severe problems with the financial aid department in that my financial need is stated as $11,000. I need help obtaining $11,000 dollars according to Devry. I'm an independent student and by law, I should be eligible for a maximum of roughly 10,000 per year in government loans. Again, my need is $11,000. I'm also an illinois resident, and should be eligible for a MAP grant. Currently, my financial aid package has $2100 in government loans and no MAP grant.

I also had an outstanding balance on my educard from classes amounting to approximately $4000. Unfortunately, the lack of aid and exorbitant costs were difficult for me to handle on my own, so I tried to pay off that amount with private education loans. Herein lies the problem: Since I had more than $1000 due on my card and I could not pay it off before the new term, I was not allowed to register for classes.

I looked for a private loan to pay off the classes from Chase. Chase will not approve a loan if I am not registered for classes. Devry will not allow registration if the debt is not paid. The only way out of this is to use Sallie Mae, their preferred lender, because they will send a notification of intent to attend. Devry will not perform this communication unless it is to Sallie Mae.

This catch-22 caused me to be unable to attend classes for 1 full term in the first instance, in the second, I was delayed a half term, and the 3rd instance, the delay was 2 full terms and most recent delay is going to be 2.5 terms. In multiple cases, I had completely paid for the term, and Devry would send me a refund check in the middle of the term. Thinking that my education was paid for with additional government aid , I used the additional money to pay down school debt from private lenders, causing me to receive a bill for the amount refunding 2 months prior, plus 13% interest.

During the 3rd instance of the delays, I was dropped from the school because of the lack of registration for 2 terms. After explaining to them that it was their fault that I could not register for classes because they were so slow about getting private loans certified due to my campus location (they couldn't certify that I was taking or intending to take classes because they didn't "know" which campus I was attending), they allowed me to continue classes.

Unfortunately, there was ANOTHER policy change, this time to my course requirements for my major of Technical Management. Apparently Devry changed the way that they mark the requirements and I was told that I needed to take 4 additional courses to be able to graduate. And because I was technically not attending school and had to be reenrolled, the new policy applied to me. So, I had to waste more time and more money on classes because of financial aid red tape and some stupid admissions woman telling me to transfer campuses.

All of this mess can be traced back to this policy change dealing with the transfers and poor financial aid practices of sending back aid in the middle of the term. My wife went to a private school too, and she never had to deal with this. Once the semester was paid for in full, if there were any additional funds, they were sent back to the student in the middle of the semester. When she signed up for the school, the degree requirements remained the same throughout her attendance. She NEVER had to delay school because of a loan not being certified...and she never had to call to find out that the school was playing ping pong with the bank while not informing her for months.

To top everything off, I am also dealing with the typical Devry educational problems. The classes are not useful, and I'm not being prepared for my field. The professors are not accommodating to working individuals, and the system during finals is often down for long periods because of too many people taking their tests.

There have been other occasions where the professors will not answer their email for questions and half the time, they do not speak english, so they copy tests from the back of a remedial programming text. For the amount of money that I am spending on this education and all of the garbage that I've gone through, I should at least be getting something out of it. At this point, I already have a job in the field, not though Devry, but through my retail jobs at Best Buy and Circuit City.

I am now a corporate office's IT professional and lead advanced projects. Have I used anything from my education at Devry? Absolutely not. Devry doesn't offer SQL, advanced database management, Visio, Computer servicing and repair. My degree should REQUIRE some education about computers other than programming courses...meaning training on anything that pertains to technical management.

I want the money from the wasted semesters back. I want my time back. I want a refund. If I had paid by credit card, I would dispute the charges. This school is a fraud and nothing more than a financial institution that hands out a cheapened piece of paper that says that you can do something without any backing whatsoever. What a waste.

DeVry is not a scam!

AUTHOR: Cicada - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, July 24, 2009

I attend DeVry and it is an insult for people on this forum to say that the degree is useless or that you don't learn anything because that simply is not true. I work 40 hours a week, am married and attend two classes that are 8 weeks long. Do you realize how much I have to study just to keep up? I feel that I'm always struggling to stay afloat. My professors have doctorates from respected schools and so far, my only complaint is that there are some foolish people in my class. But, isn't that pretty much every class? I can't keep other people from acting like idiots in class. You get out what you put in.

DeVry is not easy. I've gone to a diploma mill school and got a diploma by pretty much just showing up. DeVry isn't like that. At least not in my experience.

The same thing happened to me. I have a balance of $3000 and because it is the new term and they can only roll $200 to the new term - I am blocked.
My grants and personal loans Total $42,000. DeVry stops you from getting your degree that you have paid for. But they still get paid -

$575 a Credit Hour.... Normal school say..... Columbus State) $70/credit hr

What can we do? Nothing?!

Professors are experienced

AUTHOR: Julie - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Tuesday, May 26, 2009

I am currently a Junior at DeVry Online. I needed to address a previous comment about the professors having no experience in the field they are teaching. Every professor I have had not only had an excellent resume, but gave real life examples to demonstrate our class materials. I have taken every course online and I have not had one professor who was not only well educated, but additionally had impressive industry experience. Many of the real life examples have helped my understanding of the topics immensely. I feel it is only fair to share the other side of a student experience.

#4 Consumer Suggestion

DeVry is NOT a scam- make smart decisions- you get out of it what you put into it

AUTHOR: Jane - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Sunday, January 06, 2008

After reading some of the poorly-written, misspelled complaints of those who claim to have been "scammed" by DeVry, I have a few suggestions. I hope those who are thinking of attending this school will read these suggestions.

1. People complain that they were "suckered in" by greedy admissions reps, who promised them the moon and the stars plus a six-figure salary upon graduation. Guess what? The admissions reps are SALES PEOPLE, first and foremost. Their job is to SELL the school, and get you to sign on the dotted line. They will say or do darn near anything to get you in the door. If you don't sign up, they don't get a commission. They are no different then people selling cars, insurance, or Tupperware. With this in mind, please don't sign anything until you make an informed decision. Do your research! Firmly tell the admissions rep that you would like to take all of the paperwork (application, financial aid packet, course catalog) home with you and that you would like at least one week to think about it. Don't let them wheedle you into signing it in their office. They will probably flood you with phone calls during the next week, but do not respond. Go online to popular job sites and search for jobs in your area that correspond to the degree you are interested in. Look at the descriptions. Is that something you would like to do 5 days a week, 8 hours a day? Look at your finances and see if you can afford all of the debt. Look at the whole picture before you sign the paperwork. Wait at least a week or maybe two.

2. People complain that DeVry student housing placed them in small, barely furnished apartments with three other people. If I can make a suggestion, look for an apartment on your own. Visit several apartments in your price range that you can realistically afford. If you can't afford to live alone, find a trusted friend who is willing to share a place with you. Don't trust Student Housing. They are, in a sense, sales people as well. They are most likely getting a kickback from the apartment communities. At the Orlando campus, in 2002 at least, they only offered three communities to choose from. It's similar to those "Apartment Hunter" places. They get a kickback too.

3. Finally, people complained that they received no help from Career Services in finding a job. They say they are working at Wal-Mart, Walgreens, or other retail establishments. Career Services' duty is not to get a job FOR you. They provide you the resources to ASSIST you in your job search. Realistically, searching for a job IS a full-time job! It is up to you to put your best foot forward. I'm sure Career Services will assist you in fine-tuning your resume and making it the best possible. You then have to apply to jobs, make phone calls, and go on interviews. Career Services is not going to call employers and tell them to hire you. It's up to you to go to that interview in your best clothes, with a top-notch resume, and SELL yourself. Show that HR manager why they should hire YOU instead of "Sally Smith" or "Tom Jones". A bachelor's degree is an asset in the job market. They are more likely to hire someone with a bachelor's degree over someone with an associate's, or no degree at all. If the Career Services dept. at your campus does not have job leads, or if they just have a binder with printouts from Career Builder or Monster, don't whine and complain. Yes, they should have something better than that, but whining won't change it. It's up to YOU to actively seek employment and put your best foot forward. The responsibility of locating a job ultimately rests on YOUR shoulders. So get out there and do it!

Remember, if DeVry was a SCAM, or Diploma Mill, they would not be accredited by a regional accrediting body. There are plenty of private universities in Florida that are scams, that are accredited by "independent" accrediting agencies, give students the answers to the tests, and don't teach much. I went to one! You get out of your education exactly what you put into it. It's up to you to study, take notes, do your homework, and ask questions if you are confused. This is college, not high school. The professors are not going to coddle you and hold your hand. When you realize that and take responsibility for your education, you will not be disappointed.

I hope this helps.

DeVry is alternative choice but not a scam or ripoff.

AUTHOR: Inokexkrew - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 17, 2007

DeVry University, first off, does offer Visio classes. It's called the BIS-315 course which you take during your sophomore/ junior year. But you must of dropped out before you even got a chance to take those courses. Second, the "real" connections you don't think DU has are those with big companies in the Engineering field and Business field, which they do have. I will however give you this, DeVry does not have a credible reputation as it just became an accredited university in 2003.

The school was in transition and therefore many problems were faced. I am sorry to say, I have too seen some students dis-satisfied with the school, but those students are the type of students who weren't so intelligent and dropped the program their first semester or didn't want to continue their education, therefore they complain to see if they can get some money back or whatever. The bottom line is, the university is accredited and it is still giving opportunities to many students who couldn't attend community college or state universities.

It is an alternative choice students have, but in no way was this school a rip-off or a scam. All students must utilize their strenghts and use the available resources to succeed, anywhere!

SAVE YOUR MONEY DO NOT ATTEND THESE SCHOOLS WHICH ARE ONLY AFTER YOUR $$$$$

AUTHOR: Tell The Truth!!! - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, December 10, 2007

Unfortuneately Tackgentry236 is not an isolated problem or incident. Devry policy is that if you miss, or drop out for any reason then you are subject to any changes in your degree program.

I wonder how many people drop out of devry once they find out it is a scam? I am sure devry does not want those numbers out there. I found one community college in the area with plenty of devry students who had dropped out, and many who had graduated. Why were they attending? To get the education they did not receive.

It is a RIDICULOUS policy and has caused many people to take more than a reasonable time to complete a degree. I met one student who was in his 8th year of attending part-time. He had no clue when he would be graduating because he had a job and family to support, and the requirements kept changing. He was unable to continue attending without breaks.

Financial aid is a nightmare. I have heard so many stories about how they play games with students and come up with an abundance of excuses. One credit is $500 and there are plenty of 5 credit classes, at a cost of $2,500 for an 8 week session it is unreasonable. This price does not include the fees for labs, books, and online fees. Books for online classes are becoming e-books and you get no refund on the purchase price of the 'used' book. This is yet another example of greed. I have heard from many students how hard it is to contact an online teacher and how they do not respond to email.

Go to (search) these and other reviews and find out for yourself:

(((links redacted)))

Devry has NO inside contacts in the industry.

They will refer you to plenty of jobs on monster, careerbuilder, etc,...

Devry offers no classes in Visio!

A devry education is very costly. Cost per year? $20,000 and climbing!!

Changes to course requirements are common. Devry doesn't seem to know
what is needed in the industry.

There are NO classes in Computer Servicing and Repair.

THESE ARE ONLY PART OF THE PROBLEMS WITH THIS INSTITUTION!

I've heard many students complain they cannot understand the instructor
because of the thick foreign accent!

I know of someone who graduated with a BSTM and simply stayed at the job they had before they graduated. This person applied at many jobs but there were no job offers or interviews.

Many classes are not useful!

Classes do NOT prepare you for your field.

Professors often do not have 'real-world' skills that are up to date.

There are few that do, but devry has a tendancy to 'lose' them.

Most Professors do not assist you with your studies.

Devry has obsolete old technology.

The 'system' often has problems especially with the online classes.

Private institutions need to be shut down in order to protect the public from these scams that are only out for your money. Why should they care if you get a job or not? It doesn't hurt them since you 'owe' money.

There is often system problems.

Online classses are a joke.

When you believe all their advertising you find out it is just that advertising. They won't mention the costs ever!!!

A Technical Management degree offers nothing in Technical Management.

I agree with Margaret from Houston, Texas! Stop attending all these junk online schools!

If you want an education to prepare you for the real world attend a community college or state university. They offer reasonable rates, and an education that devry cannot offer. Put your tax dollars to work! You don't want to be in a financial bind after completing a college degree. You don't want to be ripped off and have your credit ruined!

DO NOT GO TO A PRIVATE SCHOOL FOR EDUCATION!!!! None of these schools are schools. They are a business for you MONEY! They ALL offer an inferior education because they do not have the investment that community colleges and states schools have. Ever buy a used car?

FACT: Online private schools are 100% rip off.

Private institutions are not schools they are in business for your $$$!!!

Given a choice of hiring someone who attended UOP, AXIA, STRAYER, CAPELLA, devry and all the other for profit schools I would hire NONE OF THEM!!! I would prefer to hire someone who went to a community college and state college because I know they got an education!!!

REMEMBER THIS: Anytime you try to take a short cut with something like education you will find you will listen to ANYONE who tells you what you want to hear. IN THE END YOU WILL FIND YOU ONLY CHEATED YOURSELF. You could have gone to a public institution and received a much better education for a lot less money than you were ripped off for.

STOP ATTENDING ALL THESE JUNK ON LINE SCHOOLS AND YOUR PROBLEMS WILL BE SOLVED

AUTHOR: Margaret - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Monday, October 29, 2007

All brick & morter colleges and community colleges offer on line classes now at reasonable state tuition rates. If everyone would just stop this Bull$#*& of attending these rip off places of higher education, you would not be getting yourselves in a financial bind, or having these rip off companies trying to ruin your credit. Then UOP, AXIA, STRAYER, CAPELLA, and who ever else Jon Doe for profit schools will close up shop and be gone for good!

These on line schools are a 100% rip off. I have taken a few on line classes through one of my local community college's and I am satisfied to know that its 100% accredited and transferable to any 4 year university, no questions asked.

Please everyone, stop giving yourself a heartache
