I purchased a $50 Gift Card on 12/22/07 as a Christmas Gift for my 74 year old father who enjoys fishing. Christmas Eve my father suffered a stroke and has been hospitalized ever since. Today 12/29/07 when I went to visit Dad, he requested that I cash out his gift card so he can use the money to pay for his medical expenses ( Dad has been on Medicare for a few years ). I went to the Algonquin, IL store where I purchased the card and explained what had happened to the store cashier. He tried to cash the card out, but was stopped by Chris (the store manager which would not divulge his last name) stating that he couldn't give me cash for the card because of store policy. I am now stuck with both the memories of my father's stroke and with the bad experience with d**k's Sporting Goods plus the store still has my $50 for a card I can not use ( I have had a severe back injury so I am unable to use any sports equipment ). The store has absolutely no compassion for its customers. If the store followed any Christianity at all they would have compassion for other human beings not just the almighty dollar bill.

While you are in an unfortunate position, people make up stories to get what they want all the time. How do we know you aren't just making up the story right now? I hope that isn't the case (not that I am glad your father had a stroke, my condolences there, but making that story up is sick and extremely immoral, so I hope, for your sake, that you are a legit human being). It's unfortunate, that the small minority of people ruin it for the vast majority of people who are legit. It sucks, but if everyone were honest, items wouldn't be censored, costs wouldn't be near as high, cops wouldn't exist. Don't blame a store for not believing your story, because sadly, at least half the stories we hear are a load of crap. It's hard to tell the legit ones from the fakes, as a lot of the phonies are really good at lying.
Oh, and if you wonder why the manager refused the cash out, it was because if you aren't a manager or supervisor with override powers, to cash out a gift card, the system requires an override. End of story. The manager had to approve it before the system would allow it.

The reason they do this is not for greed but so that people do not take advantage. If they allowed you to return your card, anyone could make up a story and get cash back for a gift card. I suggest re-gifting the card to someone else.
This is not a scam.
