I terminated service with Dish Network (service was in my name but my grand-daughter's home) because the family had to move and was unable to use the service any longer. I spoke to a rep on the phone, telling them the circumstances.
I was told that we needed to return the equipment--2 converter boxes and 4 remotes. They were to mail me shipping containers (boxes) to use to return the equipment to them.

I just received a credit card statement from CapitalOne that included a $600 charge from Dish Network. When I called Dish Network about this, I was told that it was a "batch charge" related to equipment that had not been returned. (Can you say "b_tch charge"?) When I told them that I had spoken to someone about said equipment and that I never received any shipping boxes, they said the boxes had been sent. The address they sent them to was not correct. The rep said the $600 charge would be credited when they received their equipment.

That charge resulted in an overlimit fee on my CapitalOne account as well as returned charges on at least one recurring service that is charged to that account monthly--I'm sure there will be others. And I will be charged past due and overlimit charges repeatedly, as I don't have funds to pay the CapitalOne account down to the allowed credit line.

Not only did I not approve this charge, but there is no way that the equipment is worth $600. How can they just arbitrarily charge an exorbitant fee like that to a credit card account? Surely that isn't legal. I know it's not ethical.

Read you contract

Did you actually read your service agreement? Also, when you signed up you should have been told something like, "The credit card used to qualify your account will be charged for any early termination fees and unreturned equipment fees."

When you closed your account you should have been told something like, "If your leased equipment is not returned within 30 days you will be charged the market value of your equipment."

This means that you did authorize the charge, therefore the charge was not fraudulent.

In addition, satellite receivers are not cable boxes. With 4 remotes I would hazard the guess you had a pair of duo receivers, receivers that go to two tv's on different channels at once. Based on the amount probably one dvr receiver. If you check the msrp for the equipment you will likely find that the amount charged is correct.

FIND YOUR CONTRACT.

IN THE CONTRACT YOU SIGNED. IT STATES WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE EQUIPMENT IS NOT RETURNED. THAT THEY WILL CHARGE YOU FOR THE EQUIPMENT IF NOT RETURNED. IT ALSO SAYS THAT THEY RESERVE THE RIGHT TO CHANGE THE CONTRACT AND THE PROGRAMMING AT ANYTIME. WITHOUT ANY WRITTEN OR VERBAL NOTIFICATION TO THE CUSTOMER. IF YOU CAN FIND YOUR COPY OF THE CONTRACT. THEN GO BACK AN READ IT. ITS NOT JUST DISH NETWORK AND DIRECTV DOING THIS. THEIR IS A LOT OF COMPANIES DOING THIS. TURN OFF YOUR CELL PHONE WHILE UNDER CONTRACT AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS. THEY WILL DO THE SAME THING AND CHARGE YOUR CARD.YOU ALMOST NEED A LAWYER ANYMORE TO READ A CONTRACT.OR EVEN YOUR INSURANCE POLICY.
