Farmers Insurance Group excessive premium increase ripoff Timonium Maryland
*UPDATE Employee: Insider take
I live in Lafayette, La. Due to the recent hurricanes, Farmers Insurance Group saw it fit to raise my homeowners insurance from $1527 last year to 3362.28 with a LA assessment of 527.87. So basically they wanted to charge me a grand total of $890.15. I wasnt even affected by the hurricanes. I find an increase of this nature excessive and wrong! Something needs to be done about insurance companies such as this!
Thank God I was able to find another company Republic Insurance, that wrote me a policy for $1422. P.S. this increase by Farmers was without warning or notification of any kind.

I hate to say it but that is how insurance works. The premiums are one big pool for the entire country. Different areas have different risks and associated premiums but that does not mean that one huge catastrophe in the north east combined with another in the midwest and south will make a certain area with a normally moderate premium become a higher premium to help pick up the slack so to speak from others.
The company does not have to give you notice unless required by law (such as your premium was determined in part from a consumer report in which case if your state requires it you will be notified via the Fair Credit Reporting Act). The notice you will receive pertaining to your particular increase is your renewal premium. I'm not sure you will find a company out there that will say mid-term "Hey just so you know in a few months we will be raising your rate". They notify you during your renewal period.
I understand the increase was very significant. The other company you went with..did you have the exact same coverage (including the limits combined with the Claims coverage), is the company a favorable company (i.e. meaning a company not like The General for autos which only provided state minimum coverage), do you know if generally the Claims service is satisfactory. You will find that in many cases higher premiums go along with more reputable companies.
Just thought I would voice my opinion because it is very easy to blame the insurance company and only the insurance company rather than understanding that you yourself is not the only thing that goes into your premium.
Everyone must share the cost of insurance whether it is auto, home, or health insurance for example and believe me if you had been affected by the hurricane your out of pocket expense (after insurance paid) would be way less than the increase at renewal and then you would not be writing the complaint because you would be one of the people the insurance company helped.
