I bought a 2001 Ford Escape from Budget autosales that had 34,000 miles on it. I also purchased a Extended warranty through Fidelity Warranty Services that stated that it covered all internal oiled engine parts. About 7 months later, the check engine light came on and I took it in for service.

It now has 38000 miles on it. Just outside of Fords Factory Warranty. The garage finds that it has a burnt valve on cylinder 4. I was thinking, boy am I glad I purchased the Extended Warranty! After all a valve is a oiled internal part of the engine. However it was the lower part of the valve that was burnt. In the combustion chamber.

According to Fidelity Warranty, that part is not oiled and therfore not covered. Sure enough, If you read the fine print of the contract, about half way through, barried down in 6 or 7 paragraphs, it states that valves are not covered!

I am still pursuing this issue through Budget autosales and Ford Motor Company. I intend on cancelling the remaining warranty through Fidelity and getting a refund.

The bottom line is Fidelity Warranty Inc. is a rip-off and only covers the 2% of Parts that "statistically will never fail" while secretly avoiding the 98% that probably will fail during the Warranty Contract period. You will be much better off taking the money that you would have spent on the extended warranty and putting it in the bank to cover needed repairs yourself.

#1 Consumer Suggestion

extended warranty, if you are not satified request a cancellation

AUTHOR: Kevin - (U.S.A.)

POSTED: Friday, April 08, 2005

"Statistically" valves do fail. I have been in the automotive business for 11 years. Eight of which being a technician and three a service contract adjuster. If you purchased a policy that excludes certain items the blame shouldn't be placed on the company, the only one you can blame is yourself for not reading it enrtirely. What I would suggest doing next time is reading the policy throughly and if you are not satified request a cancellation.
