I purchased a brand new ALH TDI VW engine from GEX International and purchased the warranty.  Before the 36 months were up on the warranty, the engine started clanging and I took my car to a reputable mechanic (all the TDI gurus recommended the mechanic shop).

After several weeks of the mechanic working with the GEX tech person and running several tests (GEX kept trying to prove it was not their fault) GEX finally agreed that it was internal and something that they should guarantee.  At this point, the GEX tech rep tells me that GEX will take care of everything including shipping.  I am thinking this is a very stand-up company - Wrong.

My mechanic pulls the engine, strips down per GEX requirements, GEX sends a shipping label to mechanic and the engine is shipped.  Next couple days go by and then I get a call from a different person at GEX that says "we have reviewed the actual engine and agree that there was something internal that we did to cause this failure (this is odd because it was supposed to be a new engine), but if you want the engine back, you need to give us a credit card number for all shipping costs because we do not pay shipping."  I say well the tech person said you did, but they say he does not know these things and if you want engine back then you pay.  Well feeling held hostage, I paid.  They then made it clear all the mechanics fees including all the testing that they requested directly to the mechanic would be my responsibility.

I get engine back and installed, it went just over 3K miles and it started clanging again.  I take to same mechanic shop and his diagnosis shows the same problem as before.  I call GEX and get run around, then they have some guy named Larry call me - new person once again.  Larry says we got you past the 36-month warranty so now it is your problem.  I argue, but he says they are only obligated to get me past the warranty.

I have never written one of these reviews or even believed them, but my advice is to stay away from GEX, they do not stand behind their work and 36K miles / 36 months being their quality acceptance on a VW TDI engine is pathetic.  These engines normally last 250K or more!  I spent over $2100 for all the shipping, testing requests made by GEX, engine pull, engine strip, engine re-assemble and engine install - just so GEX could trick me past the 36 months on my warranty (let alone the initial $4500 plus for the supposedly new engine).
